Another example of socking it to a small team:

From Jayski:
#46 Team Penalized For Infractions At Talladega: NASCAR has issued penalties to the #46 team that competes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series as a result of rule infractions discovered during opening day inspection Oct. 29 at Talladega Superspeedway. The #46 car was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-J (any determination by NASCAR officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR required rules); and 20-2.3A (unapproved added weight location and unapproved added weight – lower A-frames were filled with weight pellets) of the 2010 NASCAR rule book.
  • Crew chief Thomas Tucker has been fined $50,000 and indefinitely suspended from NASCAR.
  • Car chief Richard Boga and team manager Tony Furr have also been indefinitely suspended from NASCAR.
  • Driver Michael McDowell and car owner Dusty Whitney have been penalized with the loss of 50 championship driver and owner points, respectively.
probably the same as a hollowed out camera shell
Those oil pans allegedly weighed between 20-30 lbs as opposed to the usual 4lbs...(per jayski).

for the engineers..

"But a bigger issue ultimately might be weight. While a standard NASCAR Sprint Cup oil pan weighs about 4 pounds, the three taken off the Gibbs cars weighed an estimated 20-30 pounds apiece. Competitors contacted by SPEED.com and FOXSports.com said the heavy oil pans would allow the teams to remove weight elsewhere in the car and put it low and on the front of the car, which could provide a handling advantage, perhaps a substantial one."

Uhmm..this should be WAY more than a money fine. If the oil pans were close and only slightly overweight...okay it was an overisght not to get it approved. This was a BLATANT attempt to cheat and just becuase they got caught prior to it hitting the track only means Nascar did their job in inspection...not that it should be less or no points penalty
Was this the first week they used them? Have they EVER been on the track?
@Beagle,I completely agree, this should be a BIG deal points and moneys wise.Pure intent. The days of pulling an engine apart at the track are long gone. It's not like JGR was just going to try this for practice.

Side note since you normally do the weather. Forecast has cleared up,qualifying should be good to go.The for cast now shows the rain that should have been there today ,may be in the area tomorrow.
We might only see a 10 point ding for this, since the points are structured different now. But the money fine should be the same as the McDowell one.
They attempted what? They broke what rule? Perhaps TOG can get someone from RGM to quote the rulebook where it states, The oil pan from the engine has to weigh no more than 5 pounds and no less than 4 pounds. The oil pan from the engine must be of a uniform thickness of no less than .075 and no more than .090 The oil pan from the engine must be of ferrous metal. The oil pan from the engine must have no less than 8 bolts per side and no less than 5 on each end. The bolts securing the oil pan to the engine block must be 3/8 of an inch in diameter within .020 along the entire threaded portion, that same bolt can be no longer than one inch in total length and no less than 7/8s of an inch within .010. We don't have that. We have "actions detrimental" which in translation would burn up the entire capabilities of this hosting site. Why not put a three pound securing ring around the circumference of the bolt pattern held on by 10 ounce bolts every inch? Because it would be an "action detrimental" to stock car racing. Gibbs racing could not be so stupid as to think they could skate by with this one unless they knew that there was no "rule" (as there never is) and wanted to play rule pong with NAZICAR. There is a lot going on over in that shop and if ever a team decides to quit NAZICAR I hope it goes out in a rule bending blaze of glory.
This, from the scene daily article linked to above:

There is no specific weight requirement for oil pans. The only requirement is that the oil pan be made of magnetic steel and a maximum of 10 inches wide. As far as the approval of parts, though, the rulebook states: “Car parts and components that in the judgment of NASCAR Officials have been constructed to increase the components weight beyond normal standards will not be permitted.”

20-30 pounds, versus 4 or 5 seems like it may go beyond normal standards. We'll see...
like Carl Long and the Motor that was above spec.
So what they qualify with, they need to start the race on??
@Ken, no it's not a impound race,
We will get to see pretty early in qualifying who's going home.
Just no "happy hour" after the Q laps so set up will be from notes on prior practices.
