15:25 Easy does it for Alonso
Fernando Alonso has good reason to be satisfied with his Dakar debut. The two-time Formula 1 world champion from Spain finished 15 minutes behind Žala and narrowly missed out on a top 10 place.
15:19 Sainz holds his own while Al-Attiyah limits the damage
Carlos Sainz produced a solid performance to start the 42nd edition of the Dakar in third place, 2'50' behind the winner. Meanwhile, Nasser Al-Attiyah overcame three punctures in the closing kilometres to limit the damage to just over 5 minutes.
15:17 Vaidotas Žala storms to upset victory
Vaidotas Žala navigated the pitfalls of the opening special to spring a surprise with his maiden Dakar stage win. The 32-year-old Lithuanian, racing in his fifth Dakar, is the first overall leader with two minutes to spare over a legend like Stéphane Peterhansel.
13:44 Al-Attiyah fades near the end
After 200 km in the lead, Nasser Al-Attiyah lost time in the closing parts of the stage after his Toyota suffered a mechanical. In the end, the Qatari lost a shade over 3 minutes to Stéphane Peterhansel. We are now waiting for the rest of the field to come in
11:54 Dumas out of the race
Romain Dumas's third Dakar is already over. After finishing eighth in 2017, the Frenchman was hoping to shine in Saudi Arabia, but his dreams have gone up in smoke after his RD Limited caught fire 65 km into the special!

more on Dumas.
the Frenchman had worked hard to make his RD Limited more competitive and pursue loftier goals in Saudi Arabia. However, it was precisely his machine that let him down, as his DXX based on the Peugeot 2008 DKR went up in flames after just 65 km of racing

the Coronal bro's got to see some of it.
