20mins for the first waypoint for Branch

Brabec absolutely killing it today! What a way to make up for yesterday. Fingers crossed for the final check points!

08:42 Strong start from Brabec
Among those disappointed with their showing on the second stage, Ricky Brabec will be looking to take advantage of his starting position to regain time on his rivals. The Honda rider has completed the first 43 kilometres with the best time, 7 seconds ahead of his team-mate Kevin Benavides. Ross Branch is not struggling under the weight of opening the way and is less than 10 seconds behind the American.

08:45 Branch at a standstill after 88 km
Ross Branch has ground to a halt after an impeccable start to the stage in his position as first man out. The winner of stage two has been halted for a number of minutes after 88 km of the special. Pablo Quintanilla has also lost a significant amount of time in the same place.
09:04 Gonçalves on his way out?
Paulo Gonçalves has stopped after 30 kilometres of the special with a broken engine. The Portuguese’ rider is now awaiting his assistance team and probably will not reach the end of his 13th Dakar, meaning the Hero team will be losing its leader.

09:17 Brabec opens up a gap
Ricky Brabec has regained his pace of the first stage. The American leads after 100 km of the special, 1’34 ahead of team-mate Kevin Benavides. Toby Price is also in the reckoning, 2’42 behind Brabec.

09:21 Branch is in trouble!
Ross Branch seems to be experiencing a nightmarish third stage. Yesterday’s winner has injured his shoulder in a fall after 90 km and trails the stage leader by 39 minutes, with still 325 km to cover before the finishing line…

09:26 Van Beveren falls and exits the race
The Yamaha rider has suffered a severe fall after just three kilometres of the day’s special. He has not lost consciousness, but has been attended to by the medical team and transported by helicopter to the bivouac in Neom.

09:30 Gonçalves is out
Paulo Gonçalves has decided to not continue with his 13th Dakar, following an engine problem. The Hero rider will be transported to the bivouac. This is his sixth premature exit on the Dakar.

11:14 Brabec soars ahead
Ricky Brabec has made the difference after 250 km of the special. The Honda rider, in the lead from the first few kilometres, now boasts a lead of 4’30 over Toby Price and Kevin Benavides.

12:41 Big gains for Brabec
Ricky Brabec is head and shoulders above the rest today. The Honda rider now boasts a lead of 7’43 over Jose Cornejo after 350 km of the special. Xavier de Soultrait and Toby Price are following several seconds behind.

13:36 Price and De Soultrait get lost!
Toby Price and Xavier de Soultrait are currently lost 900 metres from the right track and are trying to find their way back. The Australian and Frenchman, who were in the top 4 on the special at the last check point, are losing precious time!

16:12 Bike race positions for stage 3 modified
Due to a technical problem that affected the GPS of the bikers, the race stewards have decided to modify the results recorded at the finishing line of the special. The results for the stage will be established using the times achieved at way-point 53, after 389 km of the initially planned route.

10:22 Sainz takes the lead
Carlos Sainz has been quick to find a good pace and post the best time after 43 km of the special. The Spaniard leads Nasser Al-Attiyah and Stéphane Peterhansel, as was to be expected, since all these drivers need to regain time after the problems the encountered yesterday!

11:02 Al-Attiyah catches Sainz
The duel between Nasser Al-Attiyah and Carlos Sainz is up and running. The two men are only separated by 11 seconds after 125 km, with the Toyota driver in the lead. Stéphane Peterhansel trails the Qatari by 1’35.

12:07 Al-Attiyah gains a few seconds more
Nasser Al-Attiyah cannot shake Carlos Sainz off his tail, but he has managed to gain a few extra seconds over the Spaniard, who now trails him by 45 seconds. Stéphane Peterhansel is also enjoying a decent stage, 1’44 behind the Qatari, as is Fernando Alonso, who currently occupies fourth position.

12:45 Sainz regains the lead
Carlos Sainz is not letting himself be pushed around! The two-time Dakar winner has regained the lead after 250 km of the special, 9 seconds in front of Stéphane Peterhansel who is also on the attack. Nasser Al-Attiyah has dropped back to third place.

13:10 Al Qassimi rolls his car
Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi has made a spectacular exit from the rally. As he was entering the neutralised zone with the 8th best time, the Emirati totalled his car by crashing and rolling several times, meaning his Dakar is finished.

15:05 Sainz at the double
Carlos Sainz has picked up his 33rd stage victory on the Dakar in Neom, beating Nasser Al-Attiyah by 3’31 and taking the lead in the general standings, a fine piece of work by the Mini driver who has managed to avoid all the pitfalls on this third special.

15:11 A great reaction from Alonso
Following a more than tricky stage yesterday, Fernando Alonso has reacted perfectly on the third special. The Spaniard, alongside co-pilot Marc Coma, crossed the finishing line in fourth place, behind the surprising Yasir Seaidan.

14:37 Currie leapfrogs Varela
Casey Currie has regained the time lost to Reinaldo Varela and has even built a lead of two minutes after 250 km. Conrad Rautenbach and Austin Jones are also both back in contact with the leaders before the final sprint. Blade Hildebrand, a Dakar Experience driver, is also in the leading group.

14:48 A major blow for the Despres/Horn duo
Cyril Despres and Mike Horn have been at a standstill for several dozen minutes after 273 km of the special. Their buggy’s engine has given up the ghost and they are now forced to wait for their assistance team to arrive.

17:22 Uncertainty for Despres
Cyril Despres and Mike Horn have managed to reach the second neutralised zone thanks to a tow from the team’s assistance truck. However, the two men do not know whether they will be able to continue their route on the Dakar… “It was a lovely day, Mike was enjoying it and we started to maintain a good pace. But since yesterday the engine temperature has been too high and after 274 kilometres it just stopped…”

Through the first two stages, bikes and cars where very close on overall time. With todays bike adjustment to WP 53 / 389km from 427km it have bikes approx. a 30 minute overall time advantage
