TALLADEGA, Ala. – Robby Gordon says he has enough sponsorship to run the full NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule next season
and has no interest in driving for anyone but himself.

Gordon said Menards is among the sponsors coming back. Gordon has had sponsorship mainly from Menards and Jim Beam this year. Jim Beam announced last November that it would sponsor Gordon through 2008 and has not yet announced its plans for 2009.

“If people are estimating that we’re going to go away, obviously they don’t know me very well,” Gordon said after qualifying Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway. “We’ll be fine.”

As far as a possible merger – Gordon had agreed in January to be bought out by Gillett Evernham Motorsports but that deal fell through – Gordon says he is not going to drive for anyone else.

“I may let someone come into my shop, but I won’t go into someone else’s shop if that makes any sense,” said Gordon, who is 32nd in points during what has been a crazy season for him.

Gordon recently began a four-race engine-leasing deal with Penske Racing.

“We’re only into race two of it, and I think they’re good motors,” Gordon said. “I’ve got a lot of respect for [team owner] Roger [Penske] and always have. It’s the first time he’s ever done a lease deal and I feel honored that he would do a program like that with us.”

Any team in the top 35, that folds. The points WILL be sold, make no mistake. Ginn could have done it. They just fucked it up.
If Robby were to fall out of the top 35, he's screwed.
Childress would out bid RGM for the 01 points.
Hopefully Robby can find a sponsor with better engines and a good COT info sharing program.
As others have, I wonder if this will lead to a switch back to Ford? With Paul Menard going to Yates, and Menards being a sponsor of Robby's it makes sense. Esp. considering the GEM fallout. I guess he can continue on with Dodge, but I'm not sure Penske really wants to be in the engine leasing business for the long term and I don't see anyway that a one car team like Robby can be successful with their own engines. At any rate, I'm happy to hear Robby is planning to run on his own. As long as he finishes in the top 35 in points and gets the gaurented spot in the first 5 races nextyear, he'll do fine.
If GEM does the Toyota switcheroo, who else can supply motors to the Dodge teams except Penske?
Ernie Elliott who supplies engines to Ganassi's organization.
Most are not RG fans because he wins, they are fans because of his attitude. The independent fighting off the big corporations and government (NASCAR). He is who he is. We are fans because of who he is, not the number of races he has won. Time is not wasted if you are being true to yourself.
Exactly.
Well said. That sums it up perfectly for me.
Continued existence as an independent owner/driver that makes races every week and is always a factor on the track can be counted as being a success, in my mind.
AS I've stated before, until I saw Robby on Speed, quite by accident, I had never seen a Nascar race but remembered him from "doing the double" when I didn't know what Charlotte was, lol I was an Indy girl since 1958..It was his single car/owner operator status that piqued my interest, and keeps it. If he wins, that's just icing on the cake. It is his quest and heart that I believe in and support, even when he is an ass to his employees.Gas on, Robby....
That's exactly how I fell too. It's the person we support, not the outcome. WHEN not if things inprove, that will be wonderful too.
I'm with you. Watching a guy struggle to field a team in Cup isn't a sign of anything other than being stubborn to the point of stupidity.

i feel it would be in robbys best intrest to stay with dodge. with gem out it would be in dodge's intrest to support RGM and a second team. if robby is to have sucsess in 2009 he needs a second team, and dodge is the best shot.
