Another sign of the times is the rumor I heard in the Cup garage that NASCAR has floated the possibility of a change in the field size for the Craftsman Truck and Nationwide Series to 28 vehicles and the Cup field down to 36 sometime in the future.

no way is that going to happen.. Fewer cars means fewer sponsers on a given weekend which means less money coming into the sport.. NASCARS going to ask for that????? I just don't think so...lol
This is a terrible idea. This is probably driven by the larger owners that are having issues finding sponsors for their ever increasing size. A couple years ago most of these teams could add a 3rd or 4th car with no problem but now the economy has dried up the money. They are looking at teams like RGM and HOF and seeing sponsors they want. NASCAR is also afraid that economic woes will force some teams to stop showing up and they will have a PR problem when the economy forces a 40 car field. By mandating a smaller field, they will always have enough cars and look as though they are managing the sport instead of shrinking. Think about how annoyed Sprint and Nationwide will be if the sport starts shrinking due to the economy. Its going to be tough sell for NASCAR to pitch their "official (insert market here) of NASCAR" with shrinking fan base, ticket sales, tv ratings and competitors.
NASCAR needs to stop chasing money and start focusing on pleasing fans...the money will follow. No fan wants less
Consider the source: Yahoo Sports. They are only a step up from the Winston Salem Journal. Won't happen, doesn't help. Regardless of the economy, 43 guys will show up. It could be Morgan Shepard or Kurt Shelmerdine but they will show up. Doesn't make sense to cut the field in any series. The field will cut itself if things get bad enough.
Only nine 4 car team owners and more sponsors for NASCAR to steal from the teams.... Also, it would make the car's ad spots worth more and probally drive team's driver and employee costs down due to 20% less demand. Tech, Pre-Race Show and qualifing would be shorter. Bigger purses, more camera time avg for each car and a true franchised deal...
On The business side... Better for the 9 teams and France
Sounds like NASCAR wants to get down to the size of IRL race. IMO, most fans like to see plenty of cars on the track and a lot of action. The restarts are the most exciting parts of the race. Reducing the number of cars, reduces the exicitement and will eventually reduce the gate receipts. Just like the COT did not reduce costs and help the sport, this idea also will not keep the sport alive.
