Monday night race would only work for Daytona 500 or maybe Bristol
It would be different and would shine a brighter light on the race bring it more attintion and viewers who might not otherwise watch.
TOG, I was also thinking Pocono on Monday night, or maybe Martinsville, I figured RG would like that as well. I agree the only way that Monday night would work would be Daytona 500 only, there are some sports shows talking about this
Saturday doesn't make sense, they do that all the time. Also considering that the 500 has rained out once, not sure if that's an issue. I think the networks would love it, since the rating were very good, and if not for JPM, they probably would have put up an amazing rating number from 10-11. The highest rating they had, was between 10-10:15, right before JPM hit the truck.
I think Montoya hit the truck a little before 10, hence the high 10-10:15 ratings. I think a few races would work on Monday night, I am sure that when Monday Night Football was announced everyone thought that was a silly idea also.
I would think NASCARs television partners know that many of the fans are busy racing themselves during many of the Saturday night races and really just busy doing something other than watching the race but all of the fans are DVRing to watch later, how many people watch the commercials when they are watching on DVR? The networks know that something is going to have to change because the sponsors paying for the commercials are not getting watched by the fans.
I can definitely see this working when NASCAR becomes a pay per view broadcast. It really does not matter what night they race because subscribers will be footing the bill more than advertisers.
matt
And then after a few years they could add a Thursday Night Monday night race.
I think Monday Night NASCAR would be a great move. Look what it did for the NFL and MLB. It would also make the Indy - Charlotte double doable again.
I think you would be hard pressed to get the track owners to agree. The attendace would drop if people had to take time off of work to go.
Move em all to Monday!, that way it free's up time to do the most important desert stuff on Saturdays
This was a topic on the radio today. My guess is if the ratings show that this Monday night Daytona 500 was a success, considering how much they were expecting to lose with the rain out and then possibly running in mid day while most NASCAR fans are at work. I would say the Network and NASCAR will take a look at how a Monday night race could be done, for one or two premier events per year. But then you also have to figure track attendance. If your TV ratings go up .5 but your at track attendance is hurt then it might not be viable. If the track promoter is not making money then he does not need NASCAR at their track. It is my understanding that the tracks do not get part of NASCAR's TV package money.
Just because something works 1 time that doesn't mean it will work more then once.... What's that saying, "Even a Blind Dog finds a bone once in awhile".
Attendence wise it worked with the 500 because of Ticket Prices, you pay that much for a ticket you're not gonna pack up and leave early unless you have no other choice. The only other time it would work would be maybe Holiday Weekends where Tuesday was also a Holiday/Off-Day which isn't to common.
