Double file restarts...good or bad? Does it help Robby?
The proposal states all starts will be double file. The race leader will have his choice of which lane to use for the restart. The third-place car will always start in the inside lane. There will be no changes in the free pass or "lucky dog," and cars that are one lap down can choose not to pit, therefore regaining a lap during a caution.
The cars staying out & choosing not to pit will create some interesting scenarios...at Bristol?
It will create some exciting restarts. You can be 30th but only 15 car lengths from the front. Should take the leaders longer to lap the field. Single file restarts at some tracks stretch around half the track.
Does it help Robby?
I think it does. Robby tends to be able to beat alot of cars on the restarts, loose a few spots after a few laps and then really gain on long runs. Restarting double file will allow Robby to pick off more positions,
Lucky Dog...it will allow drivers racing for the lucky dog to race each other at the rear and not get in the way of the leaders.

They’re “going to be a big deal,” Denny Hamlin said. “It’s going to hurt the guys that are two laps down. But, then again, the fans aren’t here to watch the guys two laps down anyway.
“They’re here to watch a great race for the win and I think with a double-file restart that you’ll see that.”

Since when aren't fans here to watch the guys two laps down? I know there have been plenty of races where all I watched were the guys two laps down and had no idea who was leading. Guess I have a problem - I'm a RG fan.

Good report.
I think this shows Nascar realizes their COT has created a passing nightmare, so by bunching them up three wide we might see some races decided by more than just a fast pit crew and a Hendrick chassis....

That, and what's with cars that are at the tail-end of the lead lap starting in the front? And what constitutes the "tail-end" vs the "front-end" of the lead lap? I think double-file restarts make the most sense--they start the race itself that way

I think this is a great idea all the way around. It should make for more exciting racing and some creative strategies.

This will make the "tail end of the longest line" penalty more severe later in the race. If you were on the lead lap and get this penalty (usually pit violations) you will be behind all of the lap down cars while everyone else on the lead lap will be in front of them. Could make thing very interesting.

it's a trade off.....You will never get to see an awesome display like Robby at RIchmond in Spring 2003...but since that is more of the exception rather than the rule....the once in a blue moon car multiple laps down to a flat tire or a pit road miscue that can race those laps back does not outweigh the benefits and excitement of double file restarts.
As for 2 lap down cars....I think it benefits them....they can stay out on a pit cycle, come around and restart 1 down, just as 1 lap down cars can stay out and get back on the lead lap...after that they can race for a LD or pull the 1 lap down move to get on the lead lap.
It's a risk...but 15-20 laps into a fuel run if there is a yeloow...probably worth staying out to come around and gain that lap and chance to see if there is another caution before your fuel runs out
