Mike, you are exactly right this is where the roadracers can make the gearing the best. Most NASCAR guys in the past would use 1st gear just to leave the pits. Robby would use a 1st gear that he could use on the track such as at Infineon coming out of the last turn. If they are only changing the rear gear rule it will only lead to higher rpms at roadcourses leading to worse gas mileage and more engine failures
The old/maybe still rule was 4th 1-1 no over or underdrive , then a narrow range of choices for 1st thru 3rd for road courses and a even narrower selection for ovals.Na$crap changed this rule shortly after they made the gear rule and teams simply used transmission ratio's to get what needed/wanted.As my memory serves.
