Richard Petty Motorsports’ #10, which is turning into the #44 driven by AJ Allmendinger. Allmendinger, who originally thought he was going to be in the 500 and now most likely won’t be locked in, also could lose a spot in the Budweiser Shootout if Hornish can get top-35 points and be one of the top six Dodges in the field. Word is Hornish will take over points from the #22 Bill Davis Racing team. Which means Davis will have to have interest or ownership in the #77 team.

Several owners with points are working last minute deals to transfer points to other teams. The only sticking point is they must have an interest or ownership of the team they transfer points to and can not own more than 4 teams + 1 aspiring rookie.

Bill Davis & Earnhardt Ganassi are holding the cards right now.

hence my revision just now...lmao!

it really is plain and simple to straighten this mess out....the rules are as follows:

Though shall never be allowed EVER just to buy Owners points from another team.

Since they are Owners Points, the entity/owner of the transferer car has to have a majority interest stake of the recipient/transferee car. By that model, Labonte, Ambrose, and Andretti would have to be racing into the 500. But deals in the past and present during the Offseason like Penske (Busch to Hornish), Yates (Kvapil to Menard) would be allowed, and fairly so.

As a corollary, NO transferring of Owner Points is EVER allowed during the season, except in the case of a team completely dissolving and selling off its assets in the entirety (like Ginn).

A team that just downsizes (4 cars to 3, 3 cars to 2, etc.) CANNOT sell off those owner points of the car that is lost/not run due to the downsizing. That Owners Point slot dissapears and everyone bumps up one spot. But as stated above, a team that is selling itself completely and dissolving, the new purchaser does inherit the previous (or possibly current) seasons Owner's Points as that makes up a considerable value of the selling entity.

Any car being run as a 5th car for a Rookie by a team owning 4 cars already can NOT be the recipient of an Owners Point tranfer to lock itself into any race before or during the season.

And there youhave it, I just solved allof Nascars problems..
Sorry, I should have wrote BDR instead of "the whole outfit".

Anyway,,it seems reasonable that Triad could sell the BDR portion of what they bought from Davis, and take "sell" Davis as part of the package. The buyers had said they were only interested in the triad portion and didn't want to run any races (despite the initial annoucement). I thought I had read somewhere that they were seperate entities. If that's the case, it makes sense that Penske got the number & points.

Extra note- Anyone remember the stories going around about Hendrick trying to buy the number 8 from DEI?
I think overall this whole point thing is out of control. It seems like half the field is running on points that someone else earned the year before. I understand its owner points not driver points but come on. THis is getting bad. Scrap the the BS top 35 rule and just run straight up qualifying for each race. If a big dog misses the race, hey that's their fault. No more free passes.
Therein lies the problem though: You're entrusting the power to make or change that rule with the same people who gave Tony Stewart a win at Talladega for getting 2nd since his sponsor, Home Depot, was also the "Official Home Improvement Warehouse of NASCAR"? Shortly after pigs come flying south from Hell because of the winter chills there will we see that happen
Wouldn't this bump Robby out from the Shootout? I mean, Dodge may elect him to be their "wildcard" entrant, but with Penske buying the 22, this now means that the top 6 Dodges would be the 9, 19, 12, 2, 43, and 77. Now the wildcard could either be Robby in the 7 or Allmendinger in the 44. My guess would be Dodge would want to run someone who will actually still be a Dodge in the 500 and thereafter....
I cannot be sure but the shootout Entry List probably was made official a few days before all this went down.
Too much time, effort and money by the teams expected to be in it was spent to be be altered at the 11th hour. Expect to see the Dinger and Robby in the SHootout....but the DInger will not be locked in for the 500 though due to this.
I am very excited about the duel races. Probably some of the best white knuckle racing of the year.
going to be a blood bath!
Ah yeah I just saw the official entry list
Also, remember the Shootout is based on top 6 2008 performance/Owners points..and the 22 earned Owners Points as a Toyota. Robby was not allowed to carry his 2008 Dodge performance into the Toyota camp..so he has to run as a Dodge. If Sam want to run a Toyota, he can be in...lol DInger's 10 team inherited another DOdges team points, hence why they bumped up the Shootout pecking order..
Hey maybe this frees up the 77 for later use.
It's official (from Fox Sports): Bill Davis is now a minority owner in Penske Racing. Penske has acquired Davis' #22 and will keep the number for further consideration to align with the #2 and #12. But for now, the #77 Mobil 1 Dodge driven by Sam Hornish Jr. will take the 22's owner points and start the 2009 season 31st, which guarantees it a position in the Daytona 500. "As a business person, you have to look at what your options are," Penske said by phone. "I think the key thing right now is it's too bad that anyone who has run a full season whether they're in the top 35 or not — and I don't mean the ones that run a half season — but if you run the full season last year, every car in every race, you hope you would be given some kind of priority."

Now Ambrose could be bumped by RCR. RCR is trying to lock in points by working a deal on the final set of points locked into the first 5 races. If RCR gets points for Bowyer as expected, then Ambrose also will have to qualify on speed or race his way in the Daytona 500. Michael Waltrip, whose Michael Waltrip Racing builds cars for Ambrose, said Tuesday that he was unsure whether Ambrose would end up being locked in for the Daytona 500
