Tony. Per section 46P of the rules:

The Hummers are either T1.3 class cars or OP1 (SCORE) Class

General Overall it is for a Trophy only (see TOG's picture he posted with the 2009 3rd place trophy).

Class T1 2WD will also win a trophy

Class T1.3 (2wd petrol) wins 3,000 euro and a trophy.

OP1 wins a trophy.

Now at least the factory deisel teams (aka VW) only wins a trophy.

The total prize purse for all classes is : 81,000 €.

So the most he could win is 3,000 euros and a box of hardware!

So this is not a dash for cash...

he gets exposure for his brand SPEED ENERGY & his other sponsors
WORLD WIDE exposure at that!

Thanks  Tony  Still a lot of money to get no expence money back.

Unless you are a Nascar start and park you aren't covering expenses off of your race winnings. It helps, but without the sponsor dollars you wouldn't win enough to keep the lights on. Same thing in Dakar/off-raod racing. The purse will never be anywhere near enough to cover your expenses.
and it's about bragging rights too.
You dont race off-road to win money. I dont know of an off-road series were the prize money even covers the cost of the race expenses. For example you will spend more money pre-running or paying for your hotels then you can win overalling the Baja 1000. Most do it for the adventure, some do it because they are financially backed by sponsors or a manufacture. Many of the manufacture backed teams are there to race and make a profit, but that profit is driven from the sponsors and manufactures not by the race itself. And regarding Dakar it seems most Manufactures are the owners of the team, unlike here in the States where a manufacture will align itself with a company.
Sponsors pay Millions per race..
