Jan 11th, 2015 Dakar Rally Stage 8 Race Info & Discussion

Join in and discuss all the action from stage 8 of the 2015 Dakar Rally. This is the second half of the Marathon stage. The special section of stage 8 is 781km long. Robby Gordon start time: 5:25am/et, and he will be the 9th car off the line. After a 9th place finish in stage 7, Gordon sits 23rd in the overall standings, 5h48m behind. Raceday chat will be available throughout the entire 2015 Dakar Rally.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Dakar bows to the laws of nature. Hence, the weather will decide which route will be taken to leave Bolivia. If it’s dry, the start could take place in the Salar de Uyuni, for a 100km route across a smooth road of white salt: full throttle and foot to the floor! The route then slows down abruptly, with the longest part of the special stage taking place on more technical mountain terrain. The day will end with more than 40km of dunes, concluding with the vertiginous descent to Iquique.



The GREEN section of the route is the connection , the RED is the Special Section of the stage.

Mike, i am not sure when Robby said it but he had a very educated guess in the top speed differential. If I remember correctly it was Toyota at 205 kmh, mini 200'and gordini 192. He said in the clip what he saw confirmed it.

That is mighty quick I do not know how much the Toyota and Mini are restricted according to ASO regs?

Ya know, I think I found out why I follow RG. Typical desert racing in the western US starts with regional races and weekenders and "garage built" cars by someone who does something totally different for a living. Gordon has a really big garage, but it still feels like he's struggling to meet targets and comming up with ideas out of the blue similar to some of the cars you see at the track locally.

The big factory teams don't feel that way... Engineers, CAD, test, fix, data, data, sterile room, lab coats, data, data, old grey haired guy, wind tunnel, data, data, fix, data... perfection.

I know Robby does these things too, but maybe it's the way he markets himself... A typical garage racer. There is no perfecting, just a "that should do" fix and a whole lotta heart. That's the desert racing I'm used to at home, so maybe that is the connection. You say I can't win with 2wd... HA!... hold my beer and watch this!

But my nutritionist said if I eat 8 grams of ginseng every day I would decrease reaction time by .003 seconds.... Phuk that, "You hungry?"... "Yeah."... "There's a McDonalds!"

Either way, go Robby! We need at least one stage win to brag about, but the Da-kar sticker is going on my car either way.

I agree with him , part of the reason we all love Robby so much is he's always been ( like what I like to call him ) a LONE WOLF . He does things on his own his own way and on his own dime .

I'm behind in viewing videos because one's loaded directly to the site give me issues, but can you tell me where ring gear issue was spoken/read about?

Digging the header. So far Connection to the race, 1060 miles. Raced miles 1941 miles and connection to the Biv 587 miles. Its not perfect but i believe its close. 3588 miles on the Gordini as of the rest day Wow !

Stefan, he has been in the stage lead as late as the next to last waypoint and iirc 1second out at the last wp on Thursday. It is not like topspeed is the only thing in this rally, the time at topspeed is I am sure very small. Driving, navigation, prep, luck and a thousand other variables figure in. The ASO has slowed the SCORE type builds since Robby came in with the first top
flight effort (prep and driver) and showed how fast that one of the SCORE type could be.

This is the problem with trying to equalize the field with restrictor plates. We need to lobby ASO for a bigger restrictor.

The SIR is used in a lot of racing these days to equalize all of the different makes, valvetrains and sizes of engines. It is the easiest and most accepted way currently to accomplish the goal
