An update on something that TNT missed at Sears Point. PJ Jones was the first one out of the race at Sears Point but TNT didn’t bother to update us on the reasons why. He lost the power steering belt on the pace lap, took the green, then looped in going into turn 7. To add insult to injury, he also turned the engine backwards when he looped it. So now you know that it wasn’t just a start and park deal.
While not NA$CAR news, it does involve a current NA$CAR driver and a former one. Robby Gordon will be teaming with former Truck Series driver Bill Lester in the SAMAX Motorsports Daytona Prototype for the July 4th Grand Am race at Daytona. Jim Beam will be the sponsor on the car. That‘s going to be a long day for Robby. And who knows? Maybe something good will come out of this for Bill Lester too, since there’s a rumor that despite what happened to PJ Jones at Sears Point that Robby is considering running a second car at Watkins Glen for both the Cup and Busch races. So maybe we’ll see Bill back on the NA$CAR circuit for a race or two.

Someone should tell Mad Mikey to check in here - both those stories have been debunked. The 04 was a start and park deal, with the decision made very late to do it at all, and Robby has stated he is NOT driving in Grand Am this weekend.

Robbygordon.com as unkept as it is at times would have put up the grand am news I would think. With the world being so damn in touch with itself via this internet thing I take everything with a grain of salt. No grand am is fine with me.

Where was it formally reported that it was a start and park deal? I do not remember seeing it.

No "formal" announcement, but it was talked about here as soon as qualifying day.

I read the posts on here but I thought a few of those in the know said other wise. What I remember was folks confirming that it was a power steering problem. I don't remember hearing about the motor turning backwards.
Talk about it in a forum or chat doesn't make it a fact.

It was never official news , just hush hush web chatter . I don't think RGM wants to be known for fielding a second car that is a start and park , Announcing that a second or any venture is a s&p isn;t exactly the kind of press relese you want to put out. Though there is speculation about the 70 thou prize money going towards Kirks fine from Charlotte. In other words PJ did his job . ce la vie

If teams can make the business model work, then more power to them.If they could somehow change the prize structure , to where finishing 30th pays $20,000 more than 43rd, then maybe a few of the lower budget teams might race more laps,because there is the incentive.The #66 could have finished in 17th place at Loudon and only would have made about $5,000 more in prize earnings than finishing last,and the tire bill would have been higher than the prize difference.
