NASCAR has suspended a Sprint Cup driver under terms of its substance abuse policy - immediately and indefinitely - in advance of Saturday nightís race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, ThatsRacin.com and The Charlotte Observer have learned.

Sources said the driver, who has not been identified by officials, was found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 7-5 (violation of the NASCAR substance abuse policy) of the 2009 NASCAR rule book. The determination was based on findings at last weekendís race at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway.

NASCAR on Saturday declined to discuss the matter, saying that questions would be dealt with in a news conference at the South Carolina track on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Such a suspension would be the first under NASCARís drug policies for a driver at the top level, the Spring Cup Series.

You're right on--it's ridiculous; all too NASCAR robs from Peter to pay Paul it seems
So how long until someone sues Claritin, Carl Edwards, and Rousch Fenway Racing for false advertising? Carl certainly gives the impression in that commercial that he would use Claritin for his allergies while driving his race car. But maybe he just means he could, as long as he's not tested.

Seriously, NASCAR is going to get bit in the ass by this if they aren't careful. Drug companies have way more money and legal representation than NASCAR does.
If Nascar isn't careful, this could be Jeremy's biggest money making moment in his racing career.... can you say 'settlement'......?
Well I think there's not much he can do--I mean, the drivers/crew members do not have a union that negotiated the terms of drug-testing and the list of banned substances and whatnot so they really have no right to complain if Claritin or whatever was the culprit. I mean, of course NASCAR should take a PR hit, but I think Jeremy is shit out of luck unfortunately, and if things are revealed to be how he says they are then he will be nothing more than a martyr
Carl clearly says in the tv commercial that he uses Claritin. Sounds like a huge mis-representation to me...
Absolutely. Keep in mind, this is the land of Goody's Headache Powder and Beaudreaux's Butt Paste.... 'Hey Ma, i got me a job at the drug store...yesterday i couldn't spell farmisissed, now i r one.....'
Wow... Sudafed banned in NASCAR because it tests like 'Crank'. I wonder what other drugs screw up the tests prehaps Viagra or Cialis. What about the 12hour Nasal Sprays?
Sudafed, Benadryl, Theraflu, most will test like crank/meth, as many active ingredients are found in both.

Regardless, I hope this is a misunderstanding for Mayfield. If he did test positive for an illegal drug, he should be banned for life.
So nascar lets him do both practice sessions and qualify or try too... Knowing the results from last week? They knew he tested positive before practice and his attempt to qualify and yet they let him on the track???? They will not anounce the drug in question? Why is the drug testing corp even making an anouncement? Does anyone know when Mr. Obama will be making a statement on this matter? The more I read the less I know.... I'm a fan of Robby cause he can wheel a TT.
It's completely shady--they don't release the list of banned substances, which one Mayfield tested positive for, the suspension is "indefinite" since NASCAR really lacks "Claritin-Clarity" on the issue and there is no hard and fast rule like baseball or football, etc.

And that is a very good point Brad, should Mayfield have qualified would they have let him race? So why even let him on the track at all? Hadn't thought of that
According to the article I posted several pages back, NASCAR didn't get the results until noon on Saturday. Here is the article: http://www.racingone.com/article.aspx?artnum=49183
Shady?
If Mayfield was guilty of only taking Claritin or Sudafed, he would have been on Dave Despain Sunday night with the sniffles and his wife on The View Monday morning drumming up sympathy and showing how simple over the counter drugs are tarnishing his good name and reputation. And his alleged Doctor on Dr. Phil. And his dogs with the Dog Whisperer guy. They didn't. Either they have the most stupid PR people in the world or the next thing we will hear from Mayfield is that he is in rehab in Arizona.

He has been around Nascar long enough NOT to make a mistake on taking over the counter drugs that would give a positive drug test.
