NASCAR is considering scrapping the points system it has used since 1975 in favor of a simpler method that awards points per finishing position. The overhauling of the system is one of a handful of changes NASCAR is considering implementing before the season begins next month. Series officials have been detailing their ideas in individual meetings with teams. The sanctioning body wants to go to a scoring system that would award 43 points to the race winner, and one point less for each ensuing position down to one point for the 43rd-place finisher. NASCAR is also shying away from wholesale changes to its Chase for the Sprint Cup championship format. Teams have been told NASCAR is leaning toward keeping it a 12-driver field, with one caveat: The top 10 drivers following the 26th race of the season would qualify for the Chase, while the remaining two spots would go to the drivers with the most wins who are not already eligible for the Chase. Preseason testing begins Thursday at Daytona International Speedway, and NASCAR president Mike Helton and vice president of competition Robin Pemberton are scheduled to discuss some of the changes planned for 2011. But the major announcements aren't scheduled until next week when France makes a presentation during Charlotte Motor Speedway's annual media tour. NASCAR is still debating how to award bonuses under a straight points system, and ideas being considered are for anywhere from one to three points being given to lap leaders and race winners.

This would be kinda cool.
So no REAL reward for winning races......great idea.......

I would imagine you would have to do all of the races to be eligible for the chase but what if Robby won both roadraces.  I would think he would be one of the few that has 2 wins and is not in the top 10.  I think this points system is ok as long as the bonus points for say the top 5 make it very enticing to race hard for position late in the races.

Good point, that would be awesome.
It seems the same as the current one. The driver with the most points wins the championship and the higher you finish, the more points you receive.
just why to they have to keep screwing with shit.  the points system works just fine.  The only thing thats wrong with nascar is the shedule and the tracks that are in the chase.  It's just not balanced
change it...RGM & RG only running a partial schedule, it doesnt really matter..lol..

When I first read this I thought it was stupid, but the more you examine and crunch numbers it could be a drastic change...

If you look at the "proposed" new simple system it would actually tighten up all the positions. If some finished last and received 1 point he would only be -42 points behind...not -180 or more, and the cars who DNQ could be back in the mix quick. If a team "S&P" they would have maybe 4 -10 points after a few races, a team could finish in the Top 25 and be ranked ahead in 1 race. (Say a team S&P's the first 5 races, and has 12 points after race 5, a team could show up and finish 30th or better in race 6 alone and jump ahead of team that raced 5 races!!!)  It would actually change the S&P theory and make teams fight for every finishing position. Adding 1 point for leading a lap could be a huge strategy for every team. Getting 3 points for a win could be a huge swing for teams.

It would definitely change the standings drastically each week.

all Nascar is doing is moving the decimal point. Otherwise, it's the same system...bfd. if you scale it, being down 42 points will just the same as being down 175 points.
5 points for a win, 2 points for the pole, 0 points for leading a leap.

period......

HA,

then  - points for spinning on your own...or causing a caution

Curious if owners points will follow the same.  I would hope they would maybe give everyone who ATTEMPTED to qualify some credit.
