I’m getting real tired of people who know nothing about performance engines HARPING about this.
Let me explain in a way most people can understand.
The connecting rod was light by 2.7 grams.
2.7 grams is about the weight of one dime
A racing engine rotating assembly is balanced to tolerances of +or- .02 grams it is preferred to have .00grams +or- . plus the balance engine parts are piston,wrist pin,rings and circlips plus .8 grams for oil.
NASCAR picks one connecting rod out of 1 engine per manufacture at random the 20 car just happened to be that car.
TO HAVE A BALANCED ENGINE EVERY ROD MUST WEIGH THE SAME!!
So if one rod was light they all were for a total of 21.7 grams letting the engine reach high revolutions faster that is not counting the pistons, rings and piston wrist pin's

Vlad the light rod would cause a vibration
an internal vibration at the RPMs they turn the engine (approx 8400 to 8600) for 3 or 4 hours could eventually cause that rod or other parts to fail that is the reason professional engine builders see it as so critical to balance engine rotating assemblies

I get that. So what do you think happened?

All the rods are required to be a minim weight so the engine builder will lighten them to be as light as possible
Thus all rods were to light or someone screwed up
It takes approx 40 hrs to properly assemble a race engine when you have all the parts

Oh, so NASCAR Didn't test Them all? If one was lite, chances are they were all lite? I wonder why they didn't weigh them all then

@Vlad,IMO, NASCAR probably assumes the engine builder isn't that incompetent.
@Vlad, IMO,if 7 of the assemblies where within 2? Grams and it was only the one light rod. Matt might have noticed the vibration.But it would not have killed the engine.IMO

This is a comical post but I can't sit back and listen to this anymore because its ridiculous. Does any body that knows seriously about engines think that an engine shop like TRD has would not know that one rod was 3 grams light and would be overlooked. I don't think so. There is a reason why they are doing this and I suspect that real smart engine builders in other series are trying to figure out why they were doing this so they can figure out if it can work in their applications or not. You can not try and figure this out with conventional wisdom because these guys are paid a lot of money to think out of the box and they do pick up some tricks now and again. These guys are like the Stephen Hawking's of the push rod V-8. There is no way that was overlooked. These are some really genius, meticulous people your talking about here who get paid to create new ways to invent the mousetrap. Does anybody remember Kyle Busch's car at Martinsville that was throwing out the huge flame when he went into the corner about 5 years back? I'm pretty sure they did that so the cylinder would load up on fuel to slow the engine down when letting of the gas (I.e.) the corner so the engine would slow the car to save the brakes which was genius. Toyota motors have always been different the last couple years and have been putting out some serious horsepower and torque and that's not because they just assemble engines with the parts suppliers send them. They are constantly thinking creatively and not just assembling motors. I'm sorry if this offends anyone who might still think that there is only so much you can do with a V-8 and its been all figured out but it's just not the case.

What ever, the CUP guys are working offset cylinders, crank over and under balance (50% is normal)
one rod being underweight isn't rocket science thinking, it's a mistake that cost Matt Kenseth.Becouse it was illegal!
The flames out the exhaust. An air leak in the tail pipe portion of the exhaust makes flames like that.

sometimes it drives ya crazy the comments from people who read biased news reports and refuse to listen to facts from people who have built and run high preformance engines.

all i was doing was state the facts on rules and how racing engines were built

That goes back to my point...why were there even underweight rods in the shop?
