You will need a Race Radio to listen to the racers radios

This may work for you, others may know of alternatives that may be cheaper.

It will also need to be programed to the specific frequencies of the racers. I'm fairly sure PCI will do this for you.

You need to contact FDrebel, Planet member and race radio expert. Baja Tuner is pointing you in the right direction, You will not hear much with a handheld.

A cb radio will not work to pick up race frequency's. Since your in San Diego call Ham Radio Outlet. Tell them you want a Yaesu FT 2900 or compatible radio.(Icom or Kenwood, also check for hand held units too) Then explain what you want it for and ask if they will give you the instructions on how to modify it to get the race band frequency's. For an extra charge they might do the modification for you.

PLEASE what ever you do, PLEASE, PLEASE disconnect your mic and throw it in your glove box since you are only spectating and have nothing to do with the actual race. To many spectators get radio's and then lay the mic down so the trigger stays open. What this does is block that channel for anyone else. The Weatherman calls these people "Richard Craniums" aka Dick Heads! There have been race teams trying to call in and cant get to Weatherman because of this. It would suck to hear that someone died or was severely injured and they were not able to contact Weatherman for help, as some spectators mic was keyed open and no one could get threw. And yes this has happened! Good luck getting race team frequency's! Not many are willing to give them out anymore because of this exact reason. You will get more info listening to Weatherman, Score Ops, BFG relay or a pit club like Checkers or Baja Pits.

Better yet find out where a pit club is having a pit and park near them. You will be able to hear the race on their speakers, watch racers pull in for fuel, tires and repairs. and you will be in a safe place to watch. Then if you like what you see, introduce yourself to some of the pit guys and see how you can be a volunteer and help the club at the Baja 1000. Its better to be apart of the action then to be standing there and watching it go by.

BTW right now the Yaesu FT 2900 is on sale for $160. You will still need an antenna and have it cut and tuned to length, but you should be out the door for around $200.

yes do what nikal said that pisses bob off bad and everyone else too and go down there with a group of people and try not to drive around at nite to much

If you are just wanting to listen to race traffic. go to radio shack and get a scanner

program in Weathermans freq. and you will be entertained all day long.
