I'm so glad Robby got out of open wheel racing. They took a win away from the guy that made a last lap pass and won the race. ????? They said he broke the rules. They said he clearly "blocked" and was not in his "half" of the track. Ha! ha! What a joke....Please Robby, just go back for the 500 and nothing else.....No wonder NASCAR has fans, money, tv, etc. and the other guys don't.

Helio didn't make a last lap pass. He was leading (by a big margin, BTW) when a caution came out. On the restart, with 3 laps to go, he was black-flagged for "blocking". He refused to do the drive-through penalty. He crossed the finish line first, but the officials scored him as the last car on the lead lap.

I watched the replay several times, and only one camera angle made it appear that a block occurred - and that was from Will Powers in car cam as he was trying to pass Helio. The overhead angle was the most striking - it made it pretty clear that Helio was holding his line to make the corners as fast as possible - not blocking. It was a bad call, in my opinion. But that's racing.
I don't know if saying "that's racing" quite does this incident justice. I mean, it's not like a doctor that misdiagnoses cancer as the common cold would be able to say "Well, that's medicine". Egregious errors are not an inherent part of anything, and shouldn't be written off as such. This situation was terrible and needs to be called out for what it is.
It really stinks because on a track that is at least 100 feet wide, the leading car cant use the inside half of the straightaway which totally subjects the leading car to be Dive Bombed into the corner. The IRL allows the leader to run the inside line on the straights of those high speed 1.5 mi ovals, but not on road courses? That doesnt make sense.

CART had a blocking rule that did allow you to make one move then you had to hold your line, that is exactly what Helio did. But why IRL changed that rule or did not impliment it, is beyond stupidity...
Yes. It's beyond stupidity. That's why they have no fans.
Oh I agree that Helio was wronged, and he has every right to be very, very angry. But at the end of the day, racing is a sport, and in sports the officials will often make a judgement call with sketchy evidence. There is a limited amount of time (if any at all) where the officials can re-asses the situation and rectify a bad call without making things even worse. In this case the official called it wrong IMO. There is no way for them to make it right now. Imagine the turmoil if the results of a race were changed a day later, or even an hour or two later. Yes, Helio and his fans would feel better, but another driver and his fan base would be pissed, and fans in general would see the officials as even more foolish than they may look right now.

Probably the best that could be done now is for the series officials to appologize to Helio, and that should be done in private, and none of us should ever hear about it.

It does raise the question of the sanity of the rule Helio supposedly violated. On the face of it, "no blocking" might make a little bit of sense as a safety matter. But watch what happens in the race - the leader has to hold a line without changing his mind, while those behind him can go all over the place looking for a way around. It really seems to handicap the car in the lead - especially on the super wide track they were using in Alberta this weekend.
I can somewhat understand if it was not two team cars involved for IRL to take action. But when you got teammates involved, just let it go and let the team work out that issue of blocking or not. When issues happened on the track involving teammates in NASCAR, Nascar has just let things go and let the Car Owner handle it. And it was a Clean battle too, no contact what so ever...
Errors happen, nobody's perfect. In June, a ML umpire made a bad call which cost a pitcher a perfect game. He realized later that he made the wrong call and apologized to the pitcher. It didn't change the outcome, but the pitcher was appreciative. Life goes on, right or wrong, people will move on.

I didnt like that airport road course.
Yeah.....nothing against the city of Edmonton, but that course is terrible.
yes it was.
This is what Paul Tracy writes in his blog:

As far as the penalty is concerned, I agree with it. I think all the drivers (except one) agree with it. It was spelled out to us very clearly in the driver meeting how to treat the corner. The natural braking and corner-entry line for Turn 1 is on the outside of the white stripes down the runway. The right side is only to be used for trying to pass someone on the inside. If you go to the right side to keep someone behind, then you're gonna get called on it. Well, Helio drove the whole straight on the other side to keep Will Power behind him. You live your life, you make your choices: Helio chose to block his teammate, he got penalized for it and it cost Penske a win.

Dario says he blocked

Scott Dixon says he blocked

Will Power (His own TEAMMATE) says he blocked

Good enough for me.
maybe a he got a radio message......."Will is faster than you, can you confirm you understood that message". Then said f%$k it ! ....... :)
