I think everybody struggles to pass and I drove down onto the apron, a lot like (Elliott) Sadler did yesterday, and soon as I got back up to the main groove, it got loose on me. It’s a bummer. It was a brand new Dodge Charger and now it’s probably going to need a front and rear clip on it. That was a good race car. Guys did a good job all weekend long and unfortunately we find ourselves with another wrecked race car, which it doesn’t really matter. If you can’t stay on the lead lap, it doesn’t make any sense to race. That’s just my opinion.”

What is the difference? Huge difference! He attempted to run the whole race and wrecked in the process. If RG could read into the future and knew he was going to wreck then maybe he would have S&P'ed. But this was a planned race with sponsorship dollars. Should Matt Kensith and Kyle Busch have been considered S&P teams? Hell Matt finished one position infront of RG and Kyle finished behind RG.

Your comments about Baja and RG tell me you know very little about Baja and Robby's past. It was off-road racing and Baja that got RG to where he is today. His ties with Ford took him to road racing where he raced for Jack Roush. And as far as Baja not offering much opportunity to promote Speed Energy, Well once again you must not know much about RG and Baja. It has been said that if RG was to run for major of Ensanada or Governor of Baja he would have a good chance of winning, RG is that popular. Speed Energy is being distributed threw out Baja now. One of the largest distributors in So Cal also distributes in Baja. They are the ones placing Speed Energy in Baja with some local Baja distributors.

How many Speed Energy Billbords do you see in your town? This is what you see in Baja!

Also RG will have the souvenir trailer in Baja. My guess is he will sell more product at this single event then 10 NASCAR races that the trailer was at. It is very expensive to transport that hauler into Mexico with all the Customs fee's. RG would not do it if he was not turning a profit.

The latest quote from RG about what he learned from Phoenix: "I learned you need to bring the best race cars that you've got every single weekend and it just takes money and right now, we don't have enough of that." This tells me that NASCAR's cost containment program is a bust. Also, look at the new Aero package testing at Daytona today and how few teams are participating. Those that test will have an advantage in Feb. and those that don't, won't. Again, NASCAR is making the hill to climb harder for the smaller teams and forcing them into alliances with the larger teams.

Well said! The sport has grown to the point of missing the point. I believe Rusty Wallace said, "it takes 20 million to be competitive each week".
If Robby were to pool his resources, taking a pass on Baja and Dakar, would he have the $$$ to run a full season of NASCAR and be competitive? I don't believe he would have the money, without a major sponsor/donar to help.
I know in the past he's had John Menard, but that's gone to Childress Racing.
Again, I will miss my Sunday's watching Robby Gordon...drive it like you stole it!!!

good thing he doesn't drive like he stole it they would catch him real quick as slow as he is. nascar is dead and buried and they don't even know it just waiting for the funeral, funny how carl and tony are 1-2 every week now Hmmm they are irrevalent they learned nothing from formula 1 or indy car and now there are no forms of auto racing, in indy just have the 5 drivers run every week in nascar just have the 10 guys there are race every week who cares Robby is of to play in the desert hope he wins, his spirit needs a lift

All said, there were 18 different winners in Cup this season. That's almost half the field that won a race this year. All said and done, that's not bad... My first year watching NASCAR was 1985. There were 9 winners that year, largely in part to Bill Elliott winning 11 races. Even the following year, there were only 13 winners. Wouldn't that tend to indicate that NASCAR is more competitive today than in the "good ole days"? Not to mention, the action in those days was so much more "exciting" with most of the field 5+ laps down and only 2 or 3 cars on the lead lap at the end of the race. But oh yeah... those were the "good ole days".

Ah, but how many different teams or satellite teams? Certainly not 18, more like 6: Roush (plus Wood Bros, Petty), Hendrick (plus Stewart-Haas), Childress, Penske, Gibbs, and Red Bull.

Even in 1985 when Elliott dominated there may have been only 9 different winners but they came from 8 distinct teams and most were single car teams: Harry Melling, Junior Johnson, Richard Childress, Hal Needham, Billy Hagan, DiGard (Mike DiProspero & Billy Gardner), Harry Ranier, and Bud Moore.

The only single car teams with a win this year are the Wood Bros and Furniture Row but their cars are supplied by Roush and RCR. In fact, there's not a true single car team in the top 35 in owner points. The #13? Nope. Chassis' and engines supplied by MWR/TRD. The #78? No again. Chassis' and engines supplied by RCR. Yes, the racing is closer now than in the 'good ole days' as evident by the tight spread in qualifying but the distance between the haves and have nots has probably never been greater.

Very good points. The sport has evolved to the point where the "have nots" really don't have a chance to win. My dad helped prepare a car out of the local Pontiac dealership in that went down to Daytona one of the first years the track was open... and ran fairly competitive. So I completely understand how far things have come in 60 years...

I just recall (and have the VHS tapes to prove it!) that racing back in the hey day that people continually refer to wasn't all that great. I was purely looking at the number of drivers winning races and attributing at least a portion of that to talent and better competition.

In summary then, you can argue that Robby and RGM are doing it wrong and that the only way that the 7 will be competetive is by gettng chassis and engines from another team.

Going into this year with the change to Dodge, I was under the impression that RGM would get more from Penske. In some races RGM did get Penske power but that was not for every race, nor did RGM ever get a chassis from Penske. Your statement above suggests that RGM's NASCAR business model is a failure and that the only way they can be competetive is if the team gets more support from one of the Mega teams. While RGM runs a Dodge that would suggest Penske. If Penske is unwilling or demanding too much $$ to offer such support then maybe it is time to change yet again to another mfg.

Not trying to argue or prove right or wrong, just making an observation. This season was hard on the team, the driver and us the fans. I don't think NASCAR will make any changes to help the little guy. 5 first time winners this year, a points battle that comes down to the last race, Junior in the chase and some Kyle controversy that makes headlines. We didn't care for the 2011 season, but I think we, like Robby, are a minority,

keep in mind, NASCAR is just a way for Robby to pay the bills of his other racing endeavors. I truly believe that if he didnt need the money that NASCAR provided the team, he wouldnt be anywhere near a NASCAR track (except for the "fun" races). Let's face it, there are much more exciting races to both drive in, and watch as a fan. NASCAR used to be a fun sport to watch, but i honestly only watch the road courses anymore. I would much rather see Robby race in off-road... Compete for the SCORE Championship, DAKAR, LORRS, and road races / maybe plate tracks in NASCAR. The energy drink demographic isnt really the NASCAR crowd.... just my .02

Kind of off the subject of this thread but RG made it a great weekend for us at PIR. Good practice/qualifying had us feeling good. It was definitely a SPEED ENERGY crowd around the souvenier hauler Sunday morning. RG, as always, was patient and generous with his time and courteous with his fans. My wife told him she wanted a can of Fuel to mix with grey goose and he gave me an unopened can of Ethanol saying it was just as good. The guy who walked up with a Monster energy beenie was in for a surprise when RG swapped him out for SPEED beenie and then threw the monster in the trash. The girls working the hauler were great with the crowd. People were having alot of fun and that's what RG brings to his fans. The SPEED camper in turn 3 was cool and the SPEED van was driving around getting lot's of attention. Unfortunately we were deflated when he hit the wall. I am sure that is behind him at this point as he shifts focus to Baja. I also heard he and his bubbas were headed to the dunes this week. Nothing can cure misery like a day at the dunes or an afternoon in Winners Circle. Hopefully, Baja will be good to RGM and all his fans.
