just a thought, after watching the success of the converted Hummer over the last couple years, how many 1 cars thought of switching over to some sort of full body in order to attract those precious sponsor dollars? Just a thought!
@Tool, I'd like to think that Robby's use of the HUMMER (Class 1 with a body, aka HYBRID) for the 500 would spark enovation. The more I think about it, the V drive TT (like Robby's) is not so far off the current Class 1's except for the solid vs independent rear suspension.Conseptually the engine being in the middle of the chassis(mid engine) is common with some current CL 1's.More fuel, less horsepower ,narrower track width and lighter are some of the things the Hummer exihibited.Maybe Robby gave competitor's an equalizer by telling competitor's , he wasn't stopping for fuel in advance? Time will tell.
There was a time when unlimited trucks - like Ivan Stuart - ran in class 1,before they came up with Trophy Trucks. I got to be a part of that transition, as Jack Johnson stunk up Class 4 with a technically legal truck that was nearly capable of running for overall. They got two class 4 championsips then changed the config and entered the Mint 400 as Class 1. They were leading when a rear diff plug fell out and ended in a DNF.
What type of car wins usually depends on the course. A course like San Felipe usually favors the TT's. A course like the SS 300 favors the class 1. It also depends a lot on strategy, talent, and prep. So in other words Score really should have Qualifying so robby doesn't have to pass all the other guys.
many good points here folks! however with sponsorship being at a premium, i would consider running a body on my Class 1 If I had one. I love all classes of desert raicng, but honestly, who doesnt love a full bodied vehicle flying past you sporting your favorite manufacture's logo. I know a converted 1 car can win on any given day. The herbst "truggy" is essentially a TT. but back then why would this team run two cars in the same class, when essentially, they could compete for two seperate championship titles. I know now they have two trucks in TT! Neither of which look like they work very well in my opinion.
There have been class 1 cars with body's in the TT class in the past. This is nothing new or nothing RG innovated. You just don realize it because it has a truck body on it. Some have done good and some have not, mostly because of budget. A matter of fact the PPI Toyota Ivan Stewart drove was more buggy like then TT. Like mentioned the race course has allot to do with if a TT is more suited vs a class 1 style car. With that said San Felipe would be considered better for the TT's and yet the All German Motorsports Jimco class 1 car passed the TT's and overalled the race last year.
I can say in the future you will be seeing lighter more nimble TT's being built. Jimco is working with the AGM class 1 team and is building this concept of a TT right now. This has been in the works for some time. I expect you will see it by the Baja 1000 or next year.
