All drivers call every driver a pinball/weapon at some point or another during the year. It's just that some drivers are Weapons of mass destruction , while others are nothing more than slingshots.
I think people really need to take a better look at RGs past record at Sears Point. He hasn't had a top five (or top ten, or top fifteen) there since his win, and he only has two overall (three top tens). Watkins Glen is a fairly safe bet, but Michael Waltrip has a stronger avg finish at Sears Point than Robby Gordon does, nearly six positions better....
Now, I fully expect that truth to be met with a lot of BUT BUT BUT BUT BAD LUCK BUT BUT BUT SOMEONE ELSES FAULT BUT BUT BUT BAD TIMING ON THE CAUTION. Anyway you slice it, the finishes aren't there.
RG is no more of a safe bet at Sears Point than he is Daytona or Talladega. And the field, is getting better at the road courses every year...
The competition is much better on the road courses, and RG knows that. You can't knock his preperation for the road races this year, he has done all he can leading up to them, testing wise and building new cars.Still one more test to go before Infineon.
I don't pretend to know anything about what goes on behind the scenes. And I know it may sound like I am taking a swipe at people, I'm really not.
All I know is, what happens on the track on race day. And I don't even know all of that, just what Fox/ESPN/Speed choose to let me in on....
At Watkins Glen, RG is routinely a threat. Its a rarity that he is not.
Sears Point, he is one of the better drivers, but far from a lock.
Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart haven't forgotten how to drive. Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick have proven they can drive the road courses. JPM is easily a threat. Marcos Ambrose drive from 43rd to 3rd in a Wood Bros shitty car should impress everyone. Kurt Busch is solid, and for all the talk about RGs dive in the Nationwide race, Kurt WON the race...
Add on the ringers like Said, Pruett, Fellows (if he is there) and other guys with strong road racing experience that are improving like AJA and Speed....
Road courses are going to be tough for everyone...
