Why would they? They have sold every additional bottle of whiskey from their NASCAR sponsorship they were going to, so they got out. Look at AMP and Red Bull: The purpose of those sponsorships was to get the word out on relatively new products, at least in the US. Mission accomplished, and now they are gone. If Diet Mt. Dew starts selling well, Pepsi will switch to another new product, and the day they don't think they are gaining anything, they will pull out completely.
The funny thing to me is that the hard liquor giants couldn't get in the door for years, and then Crown Royal, Beam, JD and Smirnoff all jumped in, and then it was like they couldn't wait to get out. Long-time fans might also remember when Peak, Prestone and Zerex came to a gentleman's agreement in 1991 to all get out of NASCAR together and save money. It almost sank Alan Kulwicki.
NASCAR also lost all the tobacco companies like Skoal, Levi Garrett and Chattanooga Chew. All of the phone companies merged. All the tool companies merged. MAC, Stanley and DeWalt used to be three seperate cars, and now they are all on the 9 at once! The mergers are killing sponsorships as much as anything.
Only like 10 cars can win, and only 5 have a shot at the title. If you can't get on one of those 15, you aren't going to get on TV, so what is the point, unless you are launching a new product?
For the life of me, I have no idea why Target, Lowe's and Home Depot are still in. NASCAR isn't Target's audience (I think it is just the loyalty to Ganassi and the international appeal of JPM) and Home Depot is losing a lot of money right now. It wouldn't suprise me if they left after 2012.
Target is in NASCAR and Indy car because of Chip Ganassi. Chip is one of the largest private share holders of Target stock. This is why Target is one of the longest standing single team sponsors. You will never see Target look to go to another team owner, unless Chip was to get out of racing and even then I would guess Target would also get out. The building that Earnhardt/Ganassi is in is actually owned by Target Corp and is designed to be a distribution warehouse. So if the NASCAR team was to close Target could come in tear out some interior walls, they have designed knock out walls in the rear tilt up exterior walls to be able to add more loading doc doors.
Also have you ever noticed the only Target logo is the Bullseye? You never see the words Target on the side anymore. The Bullseye is on the hood and typically a small logo in the rear quarter panel somewhere. They put vendors that work with Target on the car. For example Energizer, Tums, and Gillette. These companies pay to be on the car and get exposure threw the Target sponsorship. This type of business to business helps subsidize what Target is paying and it also gives exposure to the brands they carry and have sales on. Target can also give suites and other perks to companies that are involved with their teams.
Menards has been doing this very thing. By offering companies that do business with Menards an option to be on a the race car, Menards can offer some exposure to a brand that might chose to be solely with Menards or a brand where they might want to do more business with.
Why do you think Shell left RCR and went to Penske? It did not have as much to do with NASCAR as it did with Penske's other businesses. Penske dropped Mobil to get Shell as his deal with Shell is really like a kick back, as Penske changed all his automotive business to use Shell Pennzoil brand products.Thuse Penske gets better pricing and huge volume discounts with Shell and Shell promotes its product on Penske's NASCAR and Indy cars.
That's great insight on the Target deal. I didn't realize that their vendors arrangement was as strong as the one Menards has with Peak, CertainTeed, etc.
What has become of DEI's 'Garage Mahal' that housed the 1/8/15 pre-Ganassi? I visited that place about 10 years ago and it was UNREAL.
well written matt, lots of good points ! thank you
In knowing the general state of the economey, RG and RGM as well as every other team are certain to be burning the phone lines to come up with as many sponsors as possible. Sponsors that are offering up $1,000,000. - $3,000,000.00 for partial seasons are very hard to find. All you have to do is look at Roush and the current state of there program for 2012. Everyone needs to take a step back and think of what RG and RGM have been able to accomplish in one year...pretty amazing. Granted the "race craft" of RGM is not what we or RG wants, but as we have said "it is what it is". That said, RGM is still in business, have attempted all the cup dates, ran competitive in Nationwide, ran Trophy trucks, started a new Energy drink with distrubution, as well as numerous personal appearances. Bottom line as RG and others have stated RGM is in a survival mode as well as several teams in the garage and several businness in the country as well.
My thought process is far out there by some standards... however I think not. I often times simply say what most folks are thinking but won't say or are afraid to say or perhaps are just part of the population who lack the wit, wisdom and imagination to see things in the realistic abstract manner it takes to .........bear that in mind when I say with great reservation and with all my will power to hold back these few ramblings. I'm really going to omit some thoughts and statements here and I'm really cleaning this up but here goes.
The world as a whole is in the shitter. There are far too many folks making tons of cash while folks who are just getting by are not. There is no cash for racing, we are lucky there is any at all. With farting soon to be against the law the stranglehold on freedom is teetering on the brink of .........Better and bigger teams are struggling to find funding to keep things at a competitive level. When guys like Roush and Penskie are openly in need of some sponsorship it speaks volumes about the state of the sport.
The world moves too fast and is getting too small with having everything you could ever need or want right at your fingertips. This whole world economy is crushing the values of everything and good ol' fashioned take your time chip off the old block American working buck is dead. Sniffing out sponsorship in this day and age is like pulling a dogs teeth. Like bowling with a square ball, it's like maki.........well I guess you could bowl with a square ball but then it would be a block and not a ball and then you would........Look our balls are on the block....the chopping block. If Robby Gordon has the fortunate future of having SPEED ENERGY drink make it and has the cash flow to race............... great. I'm sure that's what he wants. I'm not going to get all lathered up about "next year". (really held back on that one) I'm hoping to find a couple "in great shape" Who albums at this estate sale Friday but first I have to actually still be on this side of the grass when Friday comes........next year....you know I'm not supposed to say anything .......nothing.......not even a clue about what I know about the Cup side in 2012 but now that I might not even be alive for a garage sale in a few days I will go against my word and let this little tidbit out.....................There you go folks you heard it here first and I hope I don't lose my key to the big bathroom because I spilled the beans..........the beans now there's your answer.
I 100% agree with you and it is sad that its happening.....
another thing is hard work now adays means nothing...
I graduated in 2009 from a tech school in hvac...I been working for a hvac company since i was 16 yrs old (workstudy in school basically we work mon-thursday and go to shop on friday) and I recently got laid off..(monday actually)
Its sad the world is coming to this, I really wish robby gordon luck and everything, but I'm not gunna lie, with me being laid off I can't buy as much speed energy as I did from Gnc...Its sad but true...and with alot of us being laid off, alot of us can't buy speed energy like we once did.....that means less buisness for RG....I hope my new buisness picks up, I currently started a auto/motorsports/personal blogging channel on youtube about motorsports and I plan to show speed energy on the show to support robby gordon and help him out, since soo many people r on youtube, I'm hoping i can help him out alittle bit. I know im still very young (20yrs old turnin 21) but I never went to college and I have alot of bills to pay so, it doesn't hurt to try
Basically what I'm sayin is I agree with you, its hard out there, but we got to help eachother out
