Robby Gordon: The Last Stand Alone, Owner/Driver Still Making it! (Article)

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/145395-robby-gordon-the-last-sta...

Many people may not like Robby Gordon, at all.

But that's not what this article is about!

No matter how you feel about Gordon, you've got to admit, what he's doing, is pretty darn impressive.

He's the last true, stand alone owner/driver in the series, having success.

Now newcomers Jeremy Mayfield and Joe Nemechek are trying, but, so far, not succeeding.

Tony Stewart and Michael Waltrip are owner drivers. But Mikey has 3 cars, and an association with JTG/Daughtery Racing, and an investor as well.

Tony has two cars, a deal with Hendrick Motorsports, and Gene Haas.

Even Mayfield has an investor.

But Robby Gordon doesn't!

He's doing it the old fashioned way, and he's making it.

Every year, before the season, I find myself thinking it impossible to keep Robby in the top-35 with no help.

But here he is again, and solidly in.

Robby is not setting the world on fire, just doing what he has to to make it.

And here he is again. Robby Gordon, still in the top-35.

Over, Red Bull, and EGR, and Yates. Robby Gordon, under funded and under rated is still making races.

Of course, he does benefit from the top-35 rule, because every week he starts in the back.

But that's because he's by himself, and the entire weekend he's in race trim.

If the rule were different, Robby would probably still make it.

I think that loveable No. 7 has something to do with it.

Robby will tell you that there is one reason why he drives the No. 7, but there is actually two.

Robby will tell you that he drives it because that was Alan Kulwicki's number.

Alan, as I wrote in a previous article, was the last owner/driver to win the championship in 1992.

The other reason is Jim Beam. Jim Beam's biggest rival is Jack Daniel's.

Jack sports the brand, ol No. 7

So Jim Beam loves having the No. 7 so Jack can't have it.

That's the other reason.

Jim Beam and Robby have been together since the beginning, and they don't look like that they are going anywhere.

I hope Robby continues what he's been able to accomplish. It's nice to see the last of a dying breed making it.

Go Robby!

That's why there is only Jim Beam black in my liquor cabinet! Sorry Jack! No Crown either!
As long as Beam sticks with Robby, I stick with Beam! Done!
Very-very good article Robbuy deserves the acknoledgment of what he and his team has done in such a competative sport.
Regardless of who wrote it, it is ALWAYS great to see people recognizing the fact that he IS SUCCESSFUL even without the trophies!
