ROBBY GORDON MOTORSPORTS WATKINS GLEN
CUP SERIES QUALIFYING REPORT

WATKINS GLEN, NY (August 7, 2009)

Robby Gordon Motorsports arrived in Watkins Glen confident that the No. 7 driven
by Robby Gordon and the No. 04 driven by P.J. Jones would benefit
from the team’s test days at Road Atlanta. During the early
moments of the first practice, Joe Nemechek blew a motor on the
exit of pit road reducing the amount of track time for both drivers.
Gordon posted the fifteenth quickest time during the first practice,
while Jones tried to maximize what little time the team had to tune
the No.04 for his qualifying lap.

The track conditions during qualifying were less than favorable, and
many of the drivers in the field struggled to find grip on fresh tires.
Gordon and Jones were no exception as the No. 7 qualified 22nd and
the No. 04 qualified 39th. When asked about his qualifying run Jones
said, “It was another successful race attempt for the No. 04. We
didn’t have much practice, which hurt us a little bit in qualifying.
The last time that I was in a Cup car was Sonoma, so it would have
been helpful to have a little more seat time today. All in all, it is a
great accomplishment for Robby Gordon Motorsports to be able to
field three cars at The Glen this weekend, and I am happy to be a
part of it.”

“I got really loose in qualifying. We didn’t compensate enough for
the extra down force and lack of tire temperature. I am confident
that we will be good when it is time to go racing. I am going to have
to be methodical when we pass cars and make sure that we have all
the fenders on the car when it comes time for the last pit stop. If all
goes according to plan, it will be a hell of a race at the end,”
commented Robby Gordon.

RGM chins up rg top 5 pj top 20 lets roll
Honestly, regardless if PJ runs 1 lap or 90 laps, it's a bonus for RGM. He might be able to try a few things in practice tomorrow that may or may not benefit RG on Sunday.
Would nascar have said something if instead of taking the green...you went backwards (well in drive but in the wrong direction) a bit then turned around to get your tire temps up a bit more for the qual run?

Ive seen where someone spins on lap 1 at an oval..so no Q time officially posted..and turn it around a bit to get more speed up for the 2nd lap
The biggest benefit is they can pit togther and when PJ goes out RG will have an open stall either infront or behind him
