The best way to tighten up the points at the other end of Nascar's Top 35 is rainouts. It allows drivers 36-42 to make the race and gain points.
The best way to put some distance and give some breathing room is for qualifying to take place. Drivers outside the Top 35 who are guaranteed a spot during rainouts love to see qualifying cancelled.
"You hate to wish for rain, but knowing we're in the show and giving an opportunity to convert to race trim, let it pour!" said one of Mayfield's crew members jokingly.
Drivers Paul Menard, Aric Almirola and Scott Speed can race their way into the Top 35 in a single race, but if they fail to qualify it becomes a huge gap. Not to mention drivers with a slight advantage inside the Top 35 can be shuffled out.
