In NASCAR the cars numbers have been made famous by their drivers, owners or even sponsors.

For example the #3 will always be looked at as Dale Earnhardt's. Probably more so then it being RCR's or GM Goodwrench's. But did you know that Richard Childress drove the #3 car 172 times? Or that Ricky Rudd dove the #3 car 60 times and won twice? Even the famous Bob Bondurant drove the #3 car 1 time at Riverside raceway in 1981.

The #43 will always be know as Richard Petty's number. When you think of STP you think #43. But did you know that Kyle Petty drove the famous #43 1 time at Riverside raceway in 1981? How many know or remember that Bobby Hamilton won 2 races driving the #43 for the King? Or that John Andretti won 1 race in 1999 driving the #43?

So what is in the #7? Here are some stats that go back to 1975.

Did you know the #7 won 1 Championship with Alan Kulwicki in 1992. The #7 has started in 949 races, has 10 wins, 31 poles, 74 top 5 finishes, 179 top 10 finishes and 426 top 20 finishes. The #7 has an average starting position of 21st and finishing position of 22nd. The #7 has led 5,129 laps and completed 85% of the laps raced. The #7 has also had 260 DNF's.

Manufacture starts with the #7
Ford: 530 races
Chevrolet: 190 races
Dodge: 131 races
Toyota: 75 races
Pontiac: 32 races
Oldsmobile: 5 races
Buick: 3 races

Robby Gordon has the most starts in the #7 over any other driver, including Alan Kulwicki. Robby has made 208 starts while Alan only made 179 starts. Since 1975 39 drivers have driven the #7 car.

Some other well known drives that have driven the #7 in their careers.
Geoff Bodine / 161 starts
Kyle Petty / 117 starts
Micheal Waltrip / 68 starts
Jimmy Spencer / 36 starts
Mike Wallace / 21 starts
Lake Speed / 7 starts
Ricky Rudd / 7 starts

The first driver to win driving the #7 was Kyle Petty in 1986 driving for the Wood Brothers at Richmond Int Speedway. The last time the #7 was in the winners circle was in 1996 with Geoff Bodine at Watkins Glen.

Another Gordon named Cecil Gordon drove the #7 1 time in 1976 at Nashville Speedway driving for Dalton Racing. A driver that is not well known, but I used to work for when I was in High School. Larry Esau drove the #7 at Riverside Raceway in 1976 for McDuffie Racing and finished 13th. Larry's brother Ron raced the family's race car at that same race finishing 14th right behind his brother Larry.

Good read, thanks for doing the research. I wonder how much Danica's handlers next year would be willing to pay to put that number 7 on the side of her Cup car?
