Busch Wins Bud Shootout Thriller

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Kurt Busch slipped by the leaders in a dash to the checkered flag to win Saturday night's Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway.
Busch was able to edge ahead of Denny Hamlin in the rush to the finish line to score his first Budweiser Shootout victory and become the 19th different winner of the event which began in 1979.
Although it wasn't a point paying win, the triumph was the first restrictor plate victory for Busch.
"I'll cherish this win for a long long time," said Busch. "This was a perfect night, things fell into place and Lady Luck played into our hands."
"I'm going to start calling it teammate of the day," said Busch of the two car drafting plan that worked so well Saturday night. "Just the way this race played out, I didn't know what to expect. I knew I needed to have a teammate - I had Mark Martin in the first segment and McMurray in the second and I thank them both."
Hamlin was eventually black flagged by NASCAR after being deemed "out of bounds" when he dropped below the double yellow line at the bottom of the track. He was scored 12th as the last car on the lead lap.
That gave Jamie McMurray, the defending Daytona 500 winner who had worked with Busch in one of the two-car tandems that were so successful drafting together all night long.
Ryan Newman, Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle rounded out the top five.
Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton, Clint Bowyer and Bobby Labonte completed the first ten finishers.
The phenomenon of the field breaking into two car drafting tandems rather than the three and four wide packs of cars that had been the norm at Daytona and its sister track in Talladega also resulted in lightning fast speeds, which at one point were closed in excess of 206 mph.
But whether NASCAR makes any kind of adjustment including issuing a smaller restrictor plate to lower speeds remains to be seen.
"That was the most unexpected race I've ever been a part of.," said Newman, who was leading when the field took the white flag. "The car staying on the ground is the most important thing," he said regarding the high speeds and the question regarding NASCAR's possible next move.
The race was slowed by a pair of incidents the biggest involving six cars including Dale Earnhardt Jr., Juan Pablo Montoya, Carl Edwards, Regan Smith, Kevin Conway and Joey Logano.
Smith and Edwards made contact to start a chain reaction accident as the field raced down the backstretch into Turn 3 and before it was over four more cars were involved with fortunately no one injured.
"We were hooked in the rear, the right rear quarter panel and I was watching it and you know, when I saw this gold car coming at me and I thought I had it saved for a second but it’s hard to drive them that fast when they’re out of control," said Earnhardt. "But it was fun. The racing might look kind of crazy but it was pretty fun."
Kyle Busch and Mark Martin got together racing through Turns 1 and 2 to bring out another caution with the impact ending Martin's night.
"It just went around on him," Martin said of Busch spinning in front of him. "We were perfect-latched and nothing was different. So I don’t know if our tires being colder or, I don’t know why that happened. I have no answers. I’m sorry. I was doing the same thing everybody else was doing. It’s just a bad deal. I hate it."
The race featured a record 28 lead changes among nine drivers.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will now qualify for the 53rd running of the Daytona 500 on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
