Reasons why Robby should go to Montreal.

Last year many of us witnessed a tragedy. Our boy Robby was about to win his first Nascar race of any kind since 2004. That seemed likely to occur until he was spun under yellow by the #59 Ford of Marcos Ambrose. So, Robby decided to be Robby and line up 2nd despite what Nascar told him and wreck Ambrose and proclaim that he had won the race. He then continued to do burnouts as the race winner. That was all funny as hell, but the fact was that Nascar said Robby did not win the race, and they parked him for Pocono.

Robby, being the great guy that he is, decided to make something good out of a bad situation. He invited Marcos to drive his second car at Watkins Glen and Dover, but the deal never went through because of bad weather and Marcos' wife having a baby. Those two weeks, Robby and Camping World were getting more press than Jr. or Jeff Gordon, and I think the fact that he still claims he won the race makes it appropriate for him to go back to defend his crown.

Lets be honest here, I think we are all tired of running 25th, and I think Montreal would give Robby, his fans, and his sponsors a chance to run upfront and be the center of attention. You'd be nuts if you didn't think Robby would be followed all over to see what he was going to do next especially at a place like Montreal. I know CUP racing pays bills, but if your solidly in the top 35, you need to take a shot and go for big time exposure and a chance to win. I think your sponsors would be happier with the minutes of TV time in Montreal compared to the seconds you will be shown at Pocono. Also, to the best of my knowledge, he does not have a sponsor at Pocono, so if you were say Camping World, would you rather sponsor him at a cup race for double the money and 1/4 of the exposure or Montreal where he is a true contender.

I understand that some things aren't possible. I can see why he would want to focus on the cup effort, but I think they hit on something at the last Pocono race, and Walter and a sub driver like Matt Crafton could easily have the car running well for Robby when he gets back on Sunday. There is nothing like watching Robby Gordon on a road course, nothing at all, and it would be fun to see Robby go there and take the trophy that is rightfully his. I think a win would set this team up to sweep races at the Glen and give an extreme boost at Pocono.

So, as long as he doesn't have some bad luck at Indy and Pocono that causes him to get to 35th in owners points, I think its worth a shot to benefit the fans, the sponsors, and even RGM to go and run up front.

Chris says Montreal is a no, so I guess we can put our hopes on a Watkins Glen sweep.

I still don't see how sending a car up there no matter what becomes a no. That being said I respect RGM's decision to focus on Cup and Pocono that weekend.

Didn't he and Walter hit on something at Pocono that had him running in the top 5 near the end there? So if they could get back to that, I think even someone like P.J. could hold down the fort til Robby got back.

Comment by TOG on July 18, 2008 at 1:34am: it's easy to see it from both sides of the fence.I would rather him concentrate on the Wide race than the Cup race that weekend , just from the selfish fact of him contending for the win.But the realist in me sees that he needs to focus on practice,qualifying,and more practice to get the best finish on Sunday at Pocono. Not start from the back and hope to not get lapped, etc.I guess the logistical choice is Watkins Glen for his next Wide race.I really don't want to see PJ in that car at pocono. He blows at that track.

Comment by Hank Lee on July 18, 2008 at 1:10am: I disagree tbh G$. we've discussed this plenty of times before, at TNR, THL, aim, etc. I just don't see the benefit in prepping a car for a race all the way up in Montreal, trying to find a sponsor for it, and focusing on the cup effort at the same time. Right now Robby's in a critical stage as both a team owner and driver; Sponsors are getting sparse, and he's not too far ahead of the top 35 bubble. With the way the #7 has performed this season I wouldn't get out of that thing unless you threw a bomb inside of it. Cup pays the bills just like you said; most Nationwide team owners aren't making much money, especially running 1 off deals in Canada where it's not a sure thing you'll win.

Robby's had the "sure thing" at the Glen, Mexico, and Montreal all since 2005 and we've seen a whopping 0 wins come from this, outside of last year's debacle in Montreal.
