I saw a post in one of last week’s threads that referred to newbies on the site taking offense to the diehard fans who vent their frustration over another lackluster performance. I stand guilty as charged. Here is my confession…
I jumped on the Robby bandwagon just last year after a devotion to Kyle Petty that far outlasted his talent. As it became clear that Kyle’s driving days were drawing to a close, Robby caught my attention. I’ve always liked him. To me, he symbolizes what’s missing in America today, when hard work and determination earn you their just reward. Throw enough money at any problem and it’s solved. And look where that strategy landed our great nation. My husband and I are small business owners and struggle daily to compete with the likes of Home Depot. Yet we have our own niche and customers to serve. So does Robby. (Replace customers with fans).
I have to admit I get pretty excited every week just to see my favorite driver make the race, downright thrilled to remain on the lead lap more than a circle or two! More often than not, the only glimpse I caught of Kyle was in qualifying whenever he happened to make the air.
I can’t say enough about our sponsor’s product. It eliminates that nasty urge to maintain social graces when something goes wrong on the track. I can curse and throw things around the room without the burden of appearing a proper lady. And after a bad finish, it numbs the pain far more effectively than Mello Yellow, Hot Wheels or Georgia Pacific ever could. I’m not sure my husband is quite as enthused with my newfound relationship but I endured the years his driver bore the Jack Daniels banner. The tables are turned now as I feed him Hamburger Helper while downing shots of Jim Beam.
I guess this is like any new relationship. The early days are filled with hopes and dreams, eventually you gain a deep appreciation. Over time you grumble at each other in a loving way.
So to any of you long time supporters that I may have offended with my rose-colored posts, my deepest apologies. I love reading your stories about the old days. Makes me feel like I’m part of something more than being a mere racing fan, it’s like belonging to a tight-knit community. Thanks for having me!
