#7 Jim Beam/Menards Toyota Save Mart 350
Pre Race Report
• Michigan Recap – The race adage that hard work in the shop equates to positive results at the track was proved true again as the #7 Red Stag Toyota was fast off the truck and was fast in practice. Starting in the 13th position, Robby Gordon and crew turned in a very solid 17th place finish last week. Gordon looks to continue the positive momentum this week in Sonoma at the Infineon road course for the Toyota/Save Mart 350.
• Harvey Dent meets the #7 car – In what could be considered a stunning announcement, RGM this week confirmed that both Menards and Jim Beam would serve as primary sponsors for the Team Gordon Toyota this weekend. Showing terrific marketing savvy, the team will utilize a duel-skinned design meant to give each sponsor quarter panel space on either side of the car.
• Keeping up with the Jones’ – The surprises from RGM kept coming this week, this time with the announcement that noted road-course expert P.J. Jones would drive a second RGM entry at Sears Point this weekend. Just like the #7, Jones’ #4 Toyota will feature the combined Jim Beam/Menards color scheme. When asked about his role this weekend during the race, Jones replied that he plans to serve as a valued team mate to owner Gordon. “I’ve been Robby’s wing man before and I’m more than happy to take Rob’s sloppy seconds.”
• Planet Robby Fans Unite at Infineon – Ending days of speculation, noted PR blogger and bovine enthusiast “Spotted Cow” agreed to serve as host to all RG fans in attendance at the race on Sunday. “I’ll be flying my one-of-a-kind “Gas On” flag and chick-magnet cow spinning banner at my RV all weekend. So come on by for beer, brats, or pulled pork and share your favorite RG story. I’ll even let you give ‘ol Bessy a tug”
Robby Gordon quotes: “We always get up for the race at Sears Point and this year was no exception. Not only have we done a huge amount of testing to prepare for the race, the shop also did a great job preparing the cars for the contest since PJ is running with us. This’ll be the first time I’ll have a team mate from my own shop and I’m looking forward giving the larger teams a run for their money on Sunday.”
Kirk Almquist quotes: “I tell you, we’ve busted our asses this week to get all four cars ready. But I have to say, I can’t wait to show the field what our little team can do. Course I’ll be running between each pit box to make sure we have enough tools, tires and what not.”
Editor’s Note: Slider and family will be in the grandstands on Sunday. Come on by flying the colors and make your introductions. If there’s a beer left in the cooler, I’ll rock-paper-scissors you for it.
