Don't look now, but the next comeback driver could be Boby Labonte, Academy Sports announced a 5 race deal to add to his Ask.com sponsorship for 2009. With Yates power...Bobby will be back.
Completely different situation. The 96 is HoF in name only. It's Yate (Roush) cars with Yates-Roush engines with Yates personnel working on the cars. These teams finished well ahead of last year's HoF effort. Bobby Labonte is heads and shoulders above Gilliland and Kvapil as a driver. He'll be competitive.
Why does everyone keep saying that Yates motors are going to have killer Horsepower this year? What are they doing differently this year? If what they are saying about the motors is true, I can see Bobby being a threat this year... what's this got to do with Robby Gordon anyway?
According to the dyno test, Yates has always (including last year) had horsepower. What they've lacked is personnel and quality drivers. Yates did alot of hiring over the off season in key positions including getting Paul Menard and Bobby Labonte in the stable. Labonte finished 21st in a Petty Dodge (we all know how much Dodge was behind last year). It's all about getting the right combinations (crew chief, driver & equipment).
Paul won the pole at Daytona in July with DEI and Travis won the pole at Dega with Yates...if you look at how things have come together, it looks like (on paper) Bobby could have a season like Jeff Burton did when he went to RCR. Yates is banking on it.
I know this doesn't have anything to do with Robby, but we're race fans and the topic cleary stated what the conevrsation was about...why did you read it? and reply with an opinion!
I enjoying talking about racing. I'm a Robby Gordon fan, but that doesn't mean I can't have an opinion about anyone else or about racing in general. Ease up! It's the off season, Dakar is over. We know Robby is driving a Toyota. We knows he's in the Bud Shootout (GUESS WHAT...IN A DODGE!)...other than that what story line do you have that we can all talk about? If you have some breaking news or secret photos, please post so we can talk about something else.
I wish I had breaking news.. I would certainly clue you all in. I really didn't mean any disrespect. I read it because I was interested. I asked a couple questions which you answered to my satisfaction. I just thought I missed something in regards to how this tied in with RG.. considering the history he has had with almost buying into Yates a couple of years ago, his history with Papa Menard, etc.. I just didn't see the correlation that's all, but you've cleared that up for me. Thank you for your insight. Keep it coming!!
WHAT? I'm no huge Labonte fan, but the guys a Cup Champion, has 21 wins, 26 poles, 113 Top 5's and 195 Top 10's and has won $55,226,679 in winnings.
(crickets chirping).... .... ....
The guy can drive. Petty Enterprises was not a good operation and Bobby did a lot better with less than most. We ALL know Dodge sucked last year.
This post was never about how great Bobby is, it was meant to applaud a team for finding additional sponsorship in a rough economic time. I've had the pleasure of meeting Labonte and he's a class act. I'm happy for him, but to say he can't drive is stupid.
Bobby is a good driver but if him and Menard hook up it could spell trouble for the field(they will make a great team at Daytona/Dega)but what does this have to do with Robby Gordon winning the Daytona 500 in 16 days in a Jim Beam/ShamWoW Toyota! WooHoo (this is a joke)
