Tires are what, 1500. or so, a set? Goodyear has brought a tire that seems to be lasting 15-15 laps.
Not to worry, they've brought the Pocono tire as well. The teams won't run out of tires.
Afterall, it's only money......In their pocket!

I don't know how many tires RG used up duirng that race, but he complained of tire issues and had a couple of flats and felt like one was going down, which put him a lap down when he pitted & another caution was called for another flat. That was NOT a race, it was a test of endurance and patience. Robby's quote was he was just driving around saving tires and trying to finish without blowing a tire. I felt sorry for the fans that paid to see that (whatever it was - it certainly was not a race.) Ryan Newman and others complained too. I don't know why the testing didn't show tire failure, but NASCAR knew on Friday and Saturday that there was a problem and should have done more than just fly competition yellows. Joan

Open testing is too late. At that point the tire compound has been decided, and the testing is just to let the teams try it out and adjust. Very unlikely that a tire compound change would come as a result of open testing.

What they should have done is paid attention to the crappy tire wear they saw in the tire test in April. They should have gone back for another test, with a different tire, and kept doing it until they could get more laps on tires being tested.
Roush Miffed At Goodyear: Team owner Jack Roush got a second-place finish in Sunday's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard from Carl Edwards, but he was not in a good mood. Roush said that because his team wasn't invited to the Goodyear tire test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in April that involved only three drivers, his engineers and crew chiefs had no idea what to expect this weekend. "We only missed by an inch," he said. "This is a game of inches, but Goodyear didn't give us a chance to test here. We were one change behind all the time during practice." Goodyear tires were wearing out so quickly on the right side of the cars Sunday that NASCAR instituted "competition yellow" flags every 10 to 12 laps. That didn't help one of Roush's drivers. Matt Kenseth blew a tire on the 47th of 160 laps. The other Roush Fenway Racing drivers, Jamie McMurray and Greg Biffle, finished sixth and eighth. So it was hardly a bad day for the Ford team. Asked what NASCAR and Goodyear can do to prevent such a situation from occurring again, Roush said, "You need to go talk to Chad Knaus winner Jimmie Johnson's crew chief. There may have been a record number of caution laps for the race, 52. But the green-flag passing numbers, gathered by NASCAR’s Loop Data, showed a total of 1,545 green-flag passes during Sunday’s event, up from 1,431 during last year’s Indy race – a difference of 114 passes... CHRIS reports (on another thread) a $50,000 tire bill for the team. Like dawg said... "hell of a deal." It's a shame no one has the money to sue NASCAR/Goodyear for having their heads up their asses on compound selection.
Well over here they sue for hot coffee, so I think they would have a slam dunk on what happened at Indy;,j/k- they could sue DirectTV also, only cause on the guide it said, 11:00-3:00 NASCAR RACING
