NASCAR has suspended a Sprint Cup driver under terms of its substance abuse policy - immediately and indefinitely - in advance of Saturday nightís race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, ThatsRacin.com and The Charlotte Observer have learned.

Sources said the driver, who has not been identified by officials, was found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 7-5 (violation of the NASCAR substance abuse policy) of the 2009 NASCAR rule book. The determination was based on findings at last weekendís race at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway.

NASCAR on Saturday declined to discuss the matter, saying that questions would be dealt with in a news conference at the South Carolina track on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Such a suspension would be the first under NASCARís drug policies for a driver at the top level, the Spring Cup Series.

Mayfield being Manny!!!!!! Dumbass
He can and will sell the team, but he can no longer own or operate it. SmallSponsor.com was a ploy. Pretty sure it was ran by a former employee of Jeremy. Essentially, any person could sign up to be an affiliate. If you got them a sponsor you got a percentage of the sponsorship. The team was a hard sell to start with, and Im pretty sure this helped cover up losing All Sport. Joins a short list of banned for life guys - Hmiel , Fike and Grubb. Be interested to see what the substance was, obviously the guy as under alot of pressure (had a decent amount of money) and had to find an escape.
the drama continues
I give Mayfield the benefit of the doubt--people are far too quick to jump to conclusions, and I'm sure there's a good explanation for everything. He didn't ever strike me as the up-at-4AM-scrubbing-the-bathroom-grout-with-a-toothbrush type to me...I'm sure there was something in a prescription of his that triggered a positive test
What his perscription for marijuana screwed up the drug test. No way he blew it.
Umm no. The shady thing is that NASCAR won't even tell what he tested positive for. It could have been anything; codeine, pethidine, etc.

Look, Mayfield fired a crew member of his earlier this year for testing positive for something--I really doubt he'd be that serious about his image and his team's image and then risk it himself.
Innocent until proven guilty. A friend of mine popped for drugs on a random drug screening at work. There was no way he had done any drugs. He appealed it and it went to another lab who cleared him and ended up proving the first lab had screwed up. Part of keeping his job was monthly drug screenings. He didn't care because he knows he doesn't do drugs.....unless someone screws it up again.

We know virtually nothing about what happened except for a Nascar press release. I am going to wait and see how this plays out before hanging the man.
mayflower is a dick but he was right on about ray, penske is another story but he was young(er). As far as drug use thats tba once we know what he pee'd hot for and where did "banned for life" come from? this is not yet true but it maybe, poor guys on that team tho
I have heard from numerous folks in the business, that Mayfield has had a well known drug problem for a long time. When I heard the first reports I had no doubt that it would be Mayfield!
Mayfield said the team will be back at Charlotte with an Interem Owner and a New Driver.
wonder who will take over in the 41, sounds like Travis Kvapil is the leading candidate.
Let's hope; Kvapil is a solid driver, and really deserves a ride. It's just too bad he's not marketable whatsoever, otherwise he could be a good up-and-coming star
Yeley to sub for Mayfield: J.J. Yeley will drive the #41 Toyota for Mayfield Motorsports starting this weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Yeley replaces Jeremy Mayfield, who was suspended indefinitely from NASCAR on Saturday after violating the sanctioning body's substance abuse policy [see story below]. "We believe in J.J.'s talent," said crew chief Tony Furr. "He's available for every race. So we won't be changing drivers. J.J. has something to prove just like we all do. We want someone that's hungry just like us. Everybody on this team has at one time or another worked for a larger organization. We're all racers who are all hungry, who all want to make the most of second chances and J.J. sort of fits that mold." The team is expected to name an owner of record shortly.(FoxSports)(5-11-2009)

I am glad JJ is getting a shot to drive. I'm sure the equipment is not the greatest, but I think JJ got shafted after hearing more of his side of the story regarding HOF and even some of the things at Gibbs. It took Joey Lagano to speak about how HOF's equipment was not even close to Gibbs equipment and how quickly Joey got out of the HOF deal and how that was sort of the beginning of the end for HOF and Gibb's partnership. Before Joey speaking out, everyone thought the issues were JJ as he struggled at Gibb's and then HOF.
