Because in the race, the car goes away from him after a few laps, and then they are chasing the setup. It's not as big a deal at the RP tracks, they have a lot of time to adjust, but when everyone else except the start-and-park teams are running more than twice as many practice laps, it just seems he's missing the chance to learn more about how the car changes over time.
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he knows what he is doing. :)
yes i raced my rats at Ocean Downs. Most of my stock was too good for that track though.

RG has his license, we dont. Guess he knows enough.
I've often wondered the same thing. Especially when during the race he says "It didn't drive like this in practice". Well, maybe because you just ran twice as many laps on the same set of tires than you ran during the whole practice. I try to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it is hard when most everyone else, including the title contenders, run a lot more laps.
'zactly!
Biggest problem with Robby's plate strategy this year at both tracks he went a lap down, luckily he was able to get the caution and get back at Dega, didn't work out at Daytona.

Just race!
Im going to defend the back of the pack strategy because it can work. Look at last year for Robby he got 4 top 11's and finished 2nd in plate track points. Now this year it hasnt worked because Robby was at the worst place at the worst time at Talladega just bad luck. And if i remember correctly we had a tire issue at the 500. So if we try this strategy again there is a good chance it will work.
Yea I'm with you there, It's nice to see how a car will be over the long run.... The car should always be halfway decent with NEW damn tires on it. Races (with the exception of the plate tracks and the rain bs) I think are won in practice. This is what's going to happen.... Robby is going to play around all day in the back... and when it comes time to make his way up through the field... he's going to be cussing because the car won't run up there with everyone else because they didn't adjust on it.
Watch the happy hour practice highlights. Robby's car sucked up and caught the draft very easily, all by himself( of course he could have been on fresh tires too ) This was towards the end of final practice.Car looks great.

it looked like he was 3rd or 4th fastest average speed in happy hour....although he only ran 13 laps compared to other 20-25.
gas on!
TOG - Any idea if this is a new car, or did they repair the one at Dega? I will give it to RGM, the car is slow by itself, but Very Fast in the draft. The car seems to do better at Daytona than Dega too.

I have no problem with the ride around back strategy & playing it safe, but just don't loose the draft. Would prefer he ran a few spots closer than all the way at the tail end. It's so easy to loose the draft with the COT (Unless he can get a fast car to slam draft him back up to the pack...that was crazy to watch at Dega seeing 2 cars going faster than the pack).

He needs a solid finish...and deserves one too!
