With David Gilliland signed on with Front Row Motorsports, and Casey Mears at Keyed Up Motorsports, logic would think Scott Riggs would be the most likely candidate for the #49 car for the next available race. Of course David Stremme, Scott Wimmer, Reed Sorenson, and JJ Yeley are avaialble.
Danica will want the #7, but I don't think they will get it unless they pay a huge price tag to RGM. Look at Morgan-McClure...they kept Tony from getting the #4.
well its more of a business decision and Nascar than a team "keeping" another team from using a number...
Remember, Nascar owns all the numbers and their use is assigned and regulated by Nascar. They are NOT transferable by a car owner Multiple teams can sign up for the same number (x) and they get recorded as "x" "10x" "20x" etc. the right to use just the number without the uglly 100 or 200 number variation is usually determined by previous years owner pts for that car number entering Daytona if multiple teams wanting to use the number show up at the same track on the same weekend (though that never happens in reality except for one year with Scott Wimmer and Kirk Shelmerdine both were part time and rnning the #27...in that scenario the fastest qalifier gets the right believe it or not!)
Thus MMR kept Stewart Haas racing from using the #4 because of the "threat" they may show up. SHR could have registered the #4, but it would have been the #104 to Nascar. flash forward to Daytona 2009...if MMR doesn't show then SHR can just put a 4 on their car...but if MMR did show SHR would be forced to run the #104..not the ideal way to make merchandise...promotions etc...so to eliminate that uncertainty altogether they went with the #14....though they certainly could have paid MMR NOT to show up and use the #4 but why give them $$$ when the number wasnt THAT important to SHR?
Same logic applies to the #7 here...however this is Hendrick and Danica we're talkin about when its time to cup racing... So God forbid the doomsday scenarios people are putting forward round here were to happen..then you are right...Danicas people would pay RG to ensure they could use the #7 as that number is intricately linked with her... though it still would be the GoDaddy #107 to Nascar as RGM cannot legally trnasfer the right to use the #7...thogh they could certainly take a payoff NOT to show up...or a payoff not to renew their lease on the #7 for 2011....freeing it for Danica.
where as the #4 for SHR would have been nice...it wasn't so intricately tied to Tony...so they didn't pay...but they weren't prevented...they could have rolled the dice MMR is a bunch of has beens and weren't going to show...lol
so in short no team can technically stop a team from using the same number...only Nascar can! (shocker)
ie I can show up every week and run the #124 just waiting for Jeff Gordon not to show one week so I can run just the #24! but you can bet Nascar still may not let me still;...lol
its late..im rambling...and after we win the Daytona 500 all this hypothetical stuff will be moot :)
See Zoom knows what I'm getting at. I don't care what # RG is in as long as he's going the distance... I don't want to see the seven go to a start up unproven over rated driver....Its almost as bad as Nascar gobbling up "Offcial sponsorship" or banning an"official Nascar partner's competition brand...ie Sprint/Verizon ,At&t but if RG did have to alter the car number for "some reason" I wouldn't mind the 10...Ten in 2010 could be a luck bringer ..Ok since I'm rambling on I'll state that we need the 7/11 ,7up, Carls jr, Jack in the box, Kmart, KFC Popeyes ,Pep Boys ,Uhaul , Amtrack ,Apple, Dole,Big O...(to name a few ideas) sponsorship more than ever to secure this team and #. The Black Helicopters are circling my house... I'm going to go hide in the cellar.
