Qualifying Procedure for the Gatorade Duels / Daytona 500:

Coors Light Pole Day: This “locks in” the first two positions – the front row – for the Daytona 500. It also establishes the starting orders for the Gatorade Duel at Daytona, which are two 150-mile qualifying races for the Daytona 500.

The fastest car earns the pole for the Daytona 500 AND the pole for the first Gatorade Duel race.

The second-fastest car earns the outside pole for the Daytona 500 AND the pole for the second Gatorade Duel race.

The Gatorade Duel at Daytona: These two 150-mile qualifying races set positions 3-39 for the Daytona 500.

A combined total of 66 cars will be allowed into the two Gatorade Duel races.

Cars must compete in one of the Gatorade Duel races, in order to race in the Daytona 500.

Odd-number finishers in the final car owner point standings from last season (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) are in the first Gatorade Duel race.

Even-number finishers in the final car owner point standings from lasts season (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.) are in the second Gatorade Duel race.

Additional qualified cars that weren’t in the final top 35 at the send of last season are alternated between the two Gatorade Duel fields using an odd-even format.

so will the 49 and 7 be in the same race.......

Robby will be in Duel race #2 base on his 34th Owners Pts finish....his tsarting position in that race will be based upon his qualifyign time on Sat the 6th....

As for the #49..hard to tell how, where and who they'll start alternating them, so lets hope it falls that the #49 is in Duel #2, too

It is all based on qualifying. The top 35 cars are alternated, but it is based on qualifying, not last years points. The same goes for the cars outside the top 35.

oh contraire mon frair! :)

Duel 1 are the odd numbered finishing owner pts cars from 2009 and Duel race #2 are the even numbered finishing owner pt cars from 2009 (excpet for the Pole andf Outside Pole winners on Sat Feb 6th as they race in Duel 1 and Duel 2 respectively regardless of last yrs Owners pts)...

but they LINE UP for their Duel race based on this years qualifying effort on Sat the 6th...

thus Robby as the 34th finishing Owners point car will race Duel #2 but we will nto know where he starts in Duel #2 until after qualifying on Feb 6th...but we know for certain he will eb in DUel #2 unless he pulls off the greatest upset in NAscar history and wins the Pole

the starting spots ARE determined by their Qualifying results....its just which Duel race they are in thats already been predetermined (for the top 35 from last year)... Example..If Robby has the 3rd best overall Qual time on Saturday, then he will be on the Outside Pole for Duel race #2.

That's the retarded thing though. It used to be all odd positions from time trials was in duel 1. all even positions in time trials was in duel 2.

Simple. Easy.


Now, its just stupid. I don't know if they are trying to make the duel races more balanced, but does it really matter when there are all of what? 2 spots earned from the duel races? Does it matter if there are 20 top 35 cars in race one and only 15 in race 2?

it sure would to the non top 35 guys trying to get one of the two transfer spots...lol

there would be 5 more GOGH cars in one of the races as they always have even or only +1 off fields for the Duel races....

I believe...but don;t quote me on this, that they have predtermined whihc Duel race cars will bein since the advent of the top 35 (starting in 2004).

Prior to that, the Duel races were based on qulaifying results (odd even) and then the top 14 cars in each Duel (not counting a pole or outside pole sitter) getting into the race to set the first 30 spots...

then 31-36 were based on best remaining qual times (whihc there were 2 rounds of I believe back inthe day) and then the remaining spots were decided onthe provisional system...

Without doubt the old style made the Duel races WAY more exciting overall...but its an unfortunate result of the top 35 rule (whihc I think overall is a good thing, but has some unfair circumstances from time to time)
