Miles Stanley certainly will have a role in Sunday’s Daytona 500.
What role the 2002 Jackson High School graduate has won’t be determined until after today’s second Gatorade Duels.
Stanley is slated to be Robby Gordon’s assistant crew chief in Sunday’s Daytona. If David Gilliland qualifies today, he will be Gilliland’s crew chief.
Gilliland drives for BAM Racing, which formed an alliance with Robby Gordon Motorsports this year. Stanley has worked for Gordon for about a year and lives near Charlotte, N.C., where Gordon is based.
Stanley will spend Sunday communicating with the driver he works with, his father, Jim, said.
“They communicate to get the next pit stop ready and make adjustments on the car,” Jim Stanley said. “He’s the chief engineer on the car.
“Robby Gordon is the boss on this team, but on some teams the crew chief has more sway than the driver.”
Stanley, 26, played football at Jackson and was an all-county linebacker-defensive back.
