Major penalty coming for the #38? bleeder valves found on the tires

Read this over at jayski's.  It sounds like the #38 could have a 200 point $200,000 penalty coming and could put Robby back in the Top 35!!!

 

 

Illegal bleeder valves on the #38 at Pocono? Sources tell Sirius that NASCAR discovered clandestine [secrecy or concealed] air pressure bleeder valves on the tires of Travis Kvapil's #38 Front Row Motorsports Ford Sunday at Pocono Raceway. Following the rain delay, NASCAR officials reportedly observed two soft tires on the rear of Kvapil's car and held him from rolling back onto the track for the start of the race. Closer examination of those tire and wheel assemblies allegedly revealed illegal bleeder valves, which purge excess air pressure from the tires as it accumulates under race conditions. If confirmed, the team would likely face a major NASCAR penalty, since tires are considered to be one of the sanctions "untouchable" items, along with engines and fuel.(Sirius Speedway)(6-8-2010)

If you look at the safety side, Nascar probably will hammer the team. Look at what happened when Kasey Khane turned in front on the field. One owner said it destroyed about million dollars worth of equipment. Kasey also came a few feet from leaving the track. (Nascar Now harped big time on the lack of fencing and paved areas Pocono needs).

When you look at the past history (Indy, Charlotte) and even deaths related to tire issues (Neil Bonnett comes to mind), it's probably one of the top areas Nascar won't allow teams to mess with considering how close Goodyear is involved. I first though Nascar would issue 100 point penalty, but the more we hear and the more I think about it 200 or even 300 looks more likely to happen.

No matter what the penalty is 100, 200 or even 300 it will be a big break for RGM. Nascar penalties cost RGM last week, but could be huge benefit now. It's part of the sport. Teams know the rules and will always look to find away around the rules. Some areas just cost you a whole lot more than others...if you get caught.
If bleeders were found during the rain delay, it would be pretty easy for NASCAR to go through the rest of the tires in their pit at the same time to check for the same things. A big penalty would be great, but in all honesty, RG should just beat them on the track and then we wouldn't even be talking about how big of a penalty the #38 deserves.

That's true, but it makes you wonder if the #38 (or whichever car Kvapil and his crew had that week) might have been using these in other races, and gaining an advantage on RG that he wouldn't otherwise have had. That's why the penalty is important.

Alan, good point. The answer will be if Kvapil and Gilliland's performance suddenly wains not just from losing their "magic bullet" but also the psychological (and financial) kick in the sack just when they thought things were looking pretty rosy having three cars locked in.
if the other 2 teams in FRM had been cheating do you not think their tyres would have had the same problem during the rain delay?
No mention if NASCAR checked the #34 or #37. Maybe they were only used on the #38 or perhaps the bleeders "malfunctioned" and that's what drew NASCAR's attention.
I know for a fact they checked the 37, dont know about the 34
