Was there a "reason for the departure of Gene from the team. I have my own opinions as well as everyone else, some we most likely share. What was the straw? Are we trying to lure Larry Mac out of his cozy home and back into the game with all this madness? I just can't get a grip on this revolving door anymore. Maybe it's none of my business and I should just roll with this punch like the rest in life.

The problem for most fans is that the media embelishes the successful Driver/CC relationships that have been had success. Tony and Zippy and Jimmy and Chad are the two that people talk about the most but everyone loses sight of the fact that they are in PRIME equipment. If Jimmy drove the 34/37/38 (take your pick, same car differnt number) do you think it would make a difference who the CC is? Would Kvapil's points skyrocket if Chad was a CC? We as fans put far too much emphasis on a CC. Robby drives and his shops make the cars. Regardless of who is on the pit box Robby makes the calls. Always has, always will. If the CC makes a call and Robby disagrees, who wins the argument? Robby Gordon: Owner, Driver and Crew Chief of the #7 Toyota. It's his way or the Long Island Expressway.
Geez Rob... That was really insiteful, I always thought the owner never had input, power, control over anything. Thanks for that. Really. Did not know.
Bellyaching and sarcasm. Pretty much the theme of this site. I'll try harder to keep my observations to myself. But one last point: Bobby Labonte is still a talented driver. If he has a good car he can run in the top 20 in practice, qualifying and the race. He was placed in the 7 at NH and could not get a hold of the car. CC or no CC, it was the car, not the driver or the CC that is the problem. Robby can drive the wheels off the car at a road course and has a handle on the Superspeedway cars in terms of drafting and hanging back until go time but when it comes to anythng else. Mostly top 30's.

jackass
it's the car.......always.......wind tunnel testing would be a huge help, Gene Nead said so himself, you are correct.
Rob,
You are right. I apologize for being a such a smart ass, I know we all get "worked up" when we think things are going in the right direction, then Boom, another one bites the dust. I thought Mr. Nead was the right guy myself. Please accept my apology for being an ass. I sure as shit dont have the answers.
John
I heard Chad say once, that if you took him and JJ and put them in a car that usually run in the back that him an JJ could make that a top 5 car.
I used to not believe that, but after Kyle Busch went from the 5 to the 18, and Mears replaced him in the 5, and then again after Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman went to Haas I have to believe that the driver makes the biggest difference. just look at how the 7 car runs with RG at road races and restrictor plate races compared to the other 18 tracks.
That's because from all the time, money and resources they had at Hendrick they already know what the car needs to go fast and handle...
And that is a FAULT of RG. $$$ can buy lots of things including speed, but chemistry helps keep it all together.
Hey gang, new to the site........and an old Jimmy Spencer convert! I have watched a hard charger in sh*tty equipment run 30th place cars in the top 15 for years. That being said, I see A LOT of the same in Robby, that....and his tenacity and will to do it himself (a la Dave Marcis) has made me a fan of RG. I love a good underdog too, always pulled for Dave Marcis also. I've seen guys drive Jimmy's cars through the years, through injuries and suspensions LOL!, (most notably Ted Musgrave) and they could barely keep the car on the track. Musgrave could barely muster a top 20 at Bristol in a #7 UltraMotorsports car that led the most laps in the spring race earlier that year. Flash forward to RGM.....Musgrave misses Pocono, badly (he and Gene Nead teamed up for a NCWTS championship the year before Ultra folded). Labonte would have missed New Hampshire if not for the top 35 rule and his past champions' provisional locking them in the show. PJ Jones drives the "lesser" of RGM's cars and makes the show at Sonoma, but can't even keep the 7 out of the fence at Pocono. Starting to see a pattern here? IT IS the cars. Their lack of sucess frustrates everyone on the team, not just the owner. This scenario can work.....Dave Marcis drove the hauler, was the head mechanic, driver, owner, crew cheif, you name it. They weren't THAT successful, but Dave won a few here and there and they always made the show until Dave stuck around a little longer than he should have. However, Dave shared info w/ RCR and got his motors from there. If RGM doesn't at least form some sort of alliance w/ someone w/ some bank.....they may never put it all together before they go belly up. I hope they do, or Robby goes somewhere where he CAN win again. He is one of the most natural talents in the garage, I'm sure most any owner would love to have him in their seat. Probably won't happen, so RGM needs to improve drasticly and quickly.
I agree...............its the cars. I take my hat of to RG building his own cars, but the fact of the matter is that they only run good at the road courses and drafting tracks. I agree that he'll figure it out, cause he has with everything else he's built.........................but when, and will it be before he runs out of money.
I agree as well...was thinking the same thing about Musgrave, Labonte, and P.J. struggling in Robby's cars. There is no way that his equipment is THAT much better at road courses. It's all talent.
