Robby,

Please comment on the California 200 accident.  We, offroaders need some people with offroad experience to make some reasonable comments.  We are running the risk of losing one of our local promoters, and possibly all CA offroad.

Thanks,

Clare Ross

Clare - Robby is in the process of filming/recording a PSA for FAST-Aid. He will be coming out with a statement soon.

Thanks for everyone's support

does the BLM still charge and only allow a certain amount of vhieacial access to Johnson valley maybe the racing club should check into thisas part of thier defence P.S. i am a BFG crew dog
yes they still charge and the contract MDR had with BLM said only 300 fans at the start/finish line
sounds like BLM is equilly at fault also
no i think at fault is the \
1.fans
2.MDr
3.BLM
4.Land owner
5. the driver
That is not true. There are NO fees to attend an event in Johnson Valley. There are virtually no fences and many avenues to enter the area. BLM has signs indicating the 3 most popular entrances but the area is very large.

The only fees are if you want to enter the race or if you have an off highway vehicle you need to register it annually. Otherwise it is a totally free and open area. The last one that is this large as the econuts have managed to close the vast majority of the desert to public motorized use.

In the 45 year history of the sport there has never been an accident even close to this magnitude. While I agree some things can and should be done to make it safer, we really don't need the typical government CYA knee jerk over reaction. Accidents happen and people get hurt. It happens everyday on roads all around the world.

I am not being callous about it and honestly agree that something should be done to more forcefully keep spectators back in high congestion areas. But the knee jerk over reactions are just that. Over reactions.
I have been going to desert races since I was 6 I used to pit back in the Donahoe racing days. I thought he meant does it cost anything to Race. That was my miss understanding
The flip side of the coin is RGM is 1/2 off-road based. If the environmentalists and the people who listen to the media and think that off-road racing is dangerous and destructive get their way, and close the deserts then RGM looses out too. For 95% of the off-road racers this is a love and a hobby. For the other 5% like RGM off-road racing is a business that could be run out of business if there are no longer places to race.

People with Robby's statute in the sport need to speak and show support. We have already had some very influential people in the sport like Ivan Stewart explain the sport. People seem to listen and learn when someone like that speaks. If I get on the news I am just another pro race interview.
BJ Baldwin made a statement already, a very good one. It was on their local news in Las Vegas. You can find it on YouTube or his Facebook page. It could well be a turning point in the sport with it now gaining national attention. I never heard of it being an east-coaster until I started following RG! With enough of the sport's personalities coming out in its defense, it could raise an awareness and grow a following that it wouldn't have otherwise known. Triumph often follows tragedy. It's hard to see at the time, but with so many followers pulling together surely some good will come. For now, my prayers remain with the victim's families. They need the support of the entire community. I put a link to FastAid in the newsletter I'm publishing today. We can all do something.
SORRY TO ALL FAMILYS I AM SURE ALL OF THEM WOULD LIKE TO KEEP DESERTS OPEN TO SPECS NOT CLOSED PRIMM IS GREAT BAJA IS THE BEST IV BEEN A RACER SINCE 1973 BEEN TO ALOT OF RACES WON SOME LOST SOME NASCAR DRAGS INDY HAVE HAD IT ALL HAPPEN LETS ALL JUST KEEP RACING FOR THEM A PAY ALITTLE MORE ATTION NO NEED TO STOP THE RACES
This is typically the type of response that follows something like this. The fact of the matter is, is that there was a race going on, the driver was racing, trying to gain every second he could on the competition. The fans standing on the side of the track were doing as they have always done, trying to get as close as possible to action as they can, feeling the rush and the adrenaline as the trucks and cars go by at an arms reach. This was a tragic event that took place, but come on people no one is to blame. It was a very horrible accident that has affected many people. The driver will probably never be the same person again, he will have to deal with this for the rest of his life. Many years ago Walker Evans killed a camera man, less than 5 years ago a cameraman had his face ripped off by trophy truck tire, he ended up not making it. It happens, it is horrible, but the media jumps to conclusion on what needs to be done to prevent this from happening again. My heart goes out to all involved, but don't let this ruin a sport and recreational activity. Many auto sports have had fans killed while watching the race. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH ALL THAT ARE INVOLVED.
