Volkswagen to NASCAR? The latest entry into America's most popular motorsports series could very well be the first ever from Germany. According to Matthias Muller, the newly appointed CEO of Porsche, Volkswagen Group -- his employer's parent company -- is considering entering NASCAR. Should it follow through, Volkswagen would be just the second foreign automaker to participate [full-time] in NASCAR. Toyota was first, entering the competition in 2007 [actually Jaguar and others have run a few races, with Jaguar winning a race. Volkswagen actually ran one race in 1953]. The German automaker will reportedly begin discussions with NASCAR officials once the current season ends in late November. One of the owners that Volkswagen is considering team up with is Roger Penske.(Motortrend)

Which platform will they use, Golf, Rabbit, Jetta, CC, Touareg, Tiguan... or Maybe we will see the Beetle. He could paint it like Herbie and take on the #53.....
VW is building a new plant in the USA. It will build a new sdan there, specifically designed for US consumers. That's what their entry would be based on. I think this is exactly why NASCAR is looking at fuel injection, finally, after all these years. Other manufacturers don't want to develop a carb based motor to qualify.

Actually, Red Bull would be a better fit than RGM, given their Dakar team is all VW already.
Doesn't VW have some ties to Penske here already? Maybe that was another manufacturer I'm thinking of.

As Alan mentions, team Red Bull would be a natural fit given existing sponsorships. RGM isn't simply due to current performance. VW, or any new manufacturer, is already going to have a learning curve ahead of them in NASCAR. While RGM offers a global racing appeal for a manufacturer, IMO they're not a good enough team in NASCAR yet to warrant the type of money a manufacturer is going to need to spend.
VW bought Porsche last year. Penske fielded Porsche powered Rileys in ALMS and Grand Am. Penske also owns 12 Porsche and 14 Volkswagen dealerships.

Penske with Dodge in NASCAR is kind of strange when you consider that Penske has only 2 Dodge dealerships compared to 30 Toyota stores.
Don't they still build Jettas in Mexico? Mexicans LOVE Robby Gordon!
VW considering NACRAP and Porche is considering a F1 return. CEO must see the value in motorsports. This same guy who sunk Millions into the money losing Bugatti Veyron. But who cares, the company is filty rich. VW building a push rod engine with a carb, they will really have dig out some old technology schematics from their archieves.
Wait until the VW group finds out the rumored pay'ola amount Brian France want's.( or what he got from Toyota )
Funny you should mention Penske. I beleive Dailmer(Chrysler) is German, so V-dub wouldn't be the first.
Daimler dumped Chrysler several years ago. Fiat owns a big chunk of Chrysler now.
Chrysler Group is a limited liability corporation based in Auburn Hills, Mich. Chrysler's equity is split between the Union Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association of the United Auto Workers (67.69 percent), Fiat S.p.A. of Italy (20 percent), the United States government (9.85 percent) and the Canadian government (2.46 percent).
