Deflating your tires in soft sand is a normal way to gain more traction. A harder tire will want to dig in while a softer tire will tend to float more.
I can say the BLM can and is a real PITA to deal with. I have been on both sides when dealing with them. I have been a general public recreationalist and worked with a race promoter. I have seen the hoops that have to be jumped through when dealing with the BLM and getting permits.
Somethings the BLM do are good and do protect us and the land. But many things the BLM enforces is because "WE" the general public are Pussy's and we have let the Liberal Environmentalist's walk all over us and pass their laws. Once a law is passed the BLM has to enforce them. This is why it was so important for California to vote out Barbra Boxer and get a Republican in her seat and in the Governors seat. But once again the Liberal Los Angeles and San Francisco voters won and we are still being run by Liberals. (Sorry off my political soap box now)
I'm sure what was getting RG in trouble was he was passing out drinks without a permit. It does not matter that he was giving them away. By giving out free drinks (1000's of cans) he is promoting his drink company on public land. He is driving his moving 6X6 billboard with the Speed logo. You must have a permit to do this sort of thing on BLM land. All this draws attention and crowds and that is what drew the BLM to RG. (Unlawful Gathering) Could the BLM rangers gave RG a ticket for doing this? Yes they could have. It would have been a fine and that's about it. But if the BLM wanted to push it the fine can be in the $ thousands of dollars. I can tell you multiple story's of people having issues with the BLM and not having a permit for something you would never think you need a permit for.
I know for a fact that many BLM rangers are off-road racing fans and like off-roading. Without it they would not have a job. But I do know the Imperial Valley BLM office dreads the big weekends and when RG shows up. It's not RG's fault, but many idolize him (If you did not know this) and he draws a crowd. What usually happens is someone thinks they are RG and they try to jump something in their buggy and crash. Now here comes life flight for the 4th time that weekend.
I do know that in the Imperial Valley Deserts, which is Plaster City, Superstition, Glamis, Gordon's Wells and Butter Cup that Life Flight was dispatched multiple times for off-road accidents this Thanksgiving weekend.
True story about the BLM and a friend of mine. A few years ago my friends brother had a co-worker who was battling cancer and he was also an off-road / Jeep guy. So to help the family my friends brother put a little Jeep / buggy poker run together in the local desert to help raise some money for this guys family, and to help put Christmas gifts under the tree for his kids. Basically the people involved were all acquaintances, it was not an advertised event, Just 20 or so campers with jeeps and buggy's going out to have a good time and make helping this family a fun time. Well the poker run was successful and the kids had a great Christmas. About 8 months later the husband/father lost his battle with cancer.
Everyone had a good time doing the poker run and decided to get this group of 20 together and do it again the next year. This time the money raised would go to Children's Hospital. They did this for two years with no issues. Well this last year they did it again and a BLM ranger pulled up to the camp of 20 RV's and asked how they were doing and what was going on? One camper said we are just camping and doing a poker run. The BLM Ranger asked who was in charge of this and the guy pointed to my friends brother. Guess What! Having fun and raising a few hundred dollars for a charity is illegal on BLM land. Yep you guessed it he got a ticket for having an organized event on public land without a permit.
When he got his papers in the mail his fine was $10,000 or jail time. So when his court date came he went infront of the judge and plead his case. The Judge understood this was all started to help a friend and became a way to get all the friends together once and year and donate to Childern's Hospital. So the Judge lowered the fine to $1,500 and told him if he is to do this again he need to get a permit or he will be sited and the fine will be the full $10,000 next time.
So for doing a good deed and trying to help people he got fined $1,500 which is $1000 more then they made doing the Poker run. He checked to see what it cost to do things legal and the permit was $95,but then he needed insurance and a bunch of other things. The total cost was going to be more then what they donated.

"But many things the BLM enforces is because "WE" the general public are P****'s and we have let the Liberal Environmentalist's walk all over us and pass their laws. It's seems odd to me that you would give this as the reason to vote someone out - as if there weren't countless other important issues that might have a bearing on the way someone votes.
As far the Forrest Service they were very cool with us and were there primarily for crowd control. The unlawful gathering thing was BS. There were no more people around RGs area than anyone elses. Robby wasn't even on the ground, he was on top of the Freightliner. Anyhow, great weekend, too bad politics had to get involved.

I have to confess that I'm one of those bleeding-heart left-wing environmentalists myself, and while it may seem that there are a lot of disagreements between the left and the right when it comes to public lands issues, one issue that both sides can sit down a crack a few beers in agreement over is what a PIA it is to try and work with BLM or FS. While their stated goal is public lands protection ( and they can do a good job of that on occasion, particularly if it's just one of their guys working on their own ) it's become more and more clear to me that their overriding mission is keeping themselves in work. Once you look at it from that angle, suddenly their often-schizophrenic seeming actions begin to make sense.
As a friend once summed it up : " If there is one thing that gives a manager sleepless nights, it's the lingering suspicion that there's something out there that's not being managed. "
I have attended the sand dunes since 1976 our camping group camped at a place most of you wouldn't know of "titsworth wash" this was an area near Calipatria this area was north of the dunes. When they concreted the canal and took out the wooden bridges we had to find a new place to camp. Around 1980 we started camping at Gordons Well in buttercup valley. This is now a major spot to camp. When we camped there only a few groups went there because it was soft sand to get in. We liked it not many campers, we continued to camp there for over 10 years. No BLM....why you ask because they were not needed, they hung out next to comp hill where all the action was. Let me define "ACTION" drunk, loaded dumb asses that cause problems. I hate to say it WE the users bring this on ourselves. I am not trying to defend the BLM but if we were all a little more responsible maybe some of this CONTROL wouldn't be there. I am sure some of you go boating, the samething has happend with the jet skis, idiots use them and all of us responsible users pay the price.
