What size tire does Robby run on the Hummer? They have always looked like 37's but I can't imagine why he would run such a large time when every other car out there are running "more or less" 31's. You'd think 35's would more than do the job. Input?
The bigger the tire, the more punishment you can give it without getting a flat, or "puncture" as they call it in the race. But with the bigger tire, comes other issues. I am sure RG has it figured out.
@David, The little tire is also part of the limiting rules for 4WD's. Since Robby has driven the shit out of the current package,I'll go with his opinion. Why would I/you second guess the choice?Did you develop the tire or the RGM DAKAR racer and have insider info?
The larger tires will roll through holes and large depressions easier than the smaller tire also you gain ground clearance with the 37 something a long travel car like the Hummer would need and as stated elsewhere Robby has been doing this a long time and knows his stuff. As far as every other car out there in the Dakar running 31's there really isn't anything in the race like the Hummers. If you look at Trophy Trucks they run anywhere from 37's up to 42's. Trophy Trucks and the Hummers have little or nothing in common with the rally style cars in the Dakar.
The larger tire should help with top end speed once they get them rolling.
And on a more technical side, Big Tires look Cool.
they better have top notch support team and mechanics this year; Nasser comes off as a perfectionist. Good opportunity - let's hope the team makes the most of it! Chance for much exposure and success for both drivers!
My guess is, this has been a work in progress for a while.
The support trucks shipped a few weeks ago, and I am sure the brains of the operation shipped double, triple, quadruple of everything, just in case this situation were to take place. If not, they have plenty of parts for a one man "RG" show!
I bet the powers that be in the country of Qatar and Nasser's high school buddies are stepping up to support their driver in this years race, which will lead to more support for RG.
The defending winner of Dakar / South America and Team Robby Gordon teamed up for this years race, you could not write a better story!
Too bad the VW's got scared and gave up.......
Does anyone know why he's out of the VW to begin with?
I think they dropped the program
Earlier this year, a VW official said the Race Tourage did not fit the European evironmental image and they would be moving to smaller platforms. I am assuming that withdrawing from Dakar was the result of that statement.
VDub have moved all their considerable resources into a WRC progam. 2012 will be the second year of a development program for their Polo R WRC racer. Carlos Saniz is on board as an "advisor" and they have just signed top of the line young gun Sebastian Ogier. Al-Att has been running in the S2000 category (not as highly modified) of the WRC this year with success in a Ford. He will be bringing Qatar money over to Citroen in '12 for a semi-works ride in a top of the line DS3 WRC. He has a big following in Europe....great exposure for RGM....and a VERY interesting Dakar awaits....!
