We are now in the final days leading up until the start of the 2013 Dakar Rally here at PlanetRobby. This is the most anticipated rally in recent memory, with MANY subplots ( RG vs the mini's, the king of the energy drinks and the new "Nasser" buggy) and of course, the battle with Peterhensel. This is truly an US vs THEM battle for the ages. Those who have been here during the past Dakar Rallies, we plan on doing what we always have done: Making this a great 'getaway' and destination for all Robby Gordon and Dakar fans.
Looking at the Schedule, the scrutineering sets things in motion:
January 2,3 & 4th, 2013: The beaches of Lima
The site of the technical and administrative checks will be set up in the Magdalena District, where the South-American competitors will assemble on 2nd January in the afternoon. The “Dakar Village”, a meeting place for the competitors, the rally’s sponsors and the spectators, is next to the secure car park where the vehicles will be parked before the start.
Opening hours for the public:
01/02: 11am - 11p
01/03: 11am - 11pm
01/04: 10am - 4pm
5th January 2013: on stage in Chorrillos
Before setting off for the rally’s first special stage, the public will discover the 2013 Dakar’s competitors, on a podium set up on the beach in Chorrillos: the presentation will take place from 8am to 1.30pm.
Stage 1 runs from Lima to Pisco and has a VERY SHORT special section, only 13 km long.
We will have a thread for EACH stage of the rally, as well as the post race quotes, etc. Feel free to discuss your thoughts & predictions leading up to stage 1. Thanks for the support.

Re: Qatar Red Bull Rally Team prepares for Dakar Rally 2013
The more and more i read about Nasser he obviously doesn't know chit about anything and the more i read his comments the more i laugh. i'm still mad at myself i even let him drive a Hummer he's not worthy, his ugly little buggy can no way be 1100 lbs lighter than the Hummer
BUGLY still has 6 wheels and tires that are the same but the wheels are heavier he is using = 750 lbs and you need to have control arms and trailing arms strong enough to hold them on the vehicle.
Same Chevy LS engine thats 75 hp less and weighs the same
4 extra shocks for a total of 8 shocks, Hummer has 4
Still needs 100+ gallons = 675 lbs
Lighter transmission by 25 lbs but much weaker and still has a rear hubs and axles that are probally close to the same
Body might be lighter but i doubt it, if it was running in reverse it would look like the front of a Dodge Truck.
It still has to have all the stuff to make it a car and run, the VW was only 200 lbs lighter than the Hummer at the end of rest day in 2011 so on a good day i would give them 200 lbs to 300 lbs but i even doubt that and at the end of the day i bet they wish the parts were bigger and stronger, I will be really suprised if we see them at Rest day but then again i have been wrong.
Dont get fooled on day 1 im willing to bet he wins that Special Starting first, That i still cannot understand since he Quit last years rally.
Let the Games begin.
So i'm going to call BS on 1100 LBS lighter for the Very Ugly little Buggy
The Hummer has been refined and refined over the years and the car that we won NORRA 1000 with this year was the same car Nasser drove last year at Dakar, the motor or belt system was never changed or modified after Dakar when he Quit and the only reason that the belts came of was the minutes of over rev time per day and that slapped the torsion adjuster on the belt system. Hes a horrible teammate and a Quiter and i wish him luck as a team owner ..i..
Thanks Mike, wow sounds like you were not far off. Predictions from WJM , rest day....yep
Them is fightin' words. Love that response. Glad RG went to Peru early to intensify the hype. Could be the greatest Dakar ever!
Didn't we find out that and more last year? I think that I did. He's kind of like a rich kid without a clue. But, hey, what would I know about being rich??
And yes, their little buggy, is very ugley, or ugly.
He is the little rich kid who doesn't have a clue about anything but himself. But isn't that the way of the Mid East rich??
Sounds like a definition of a democrat / liberal.
One thing about Nassers' buggy : that rounded shape could make it a lot easier for them to roll the thing back over on it's wheels once he flips it on it's roof. Which I suspect we'll see him do with some regularity.
Honestly though, it does look like a potent design, and I'm willing to see it as a threat if he can manage to keep the thing in one piece. And I do hope he keeps it together enough to make things interesting.
If you're going to have a grudge match, both guys need to be in the fight.
Ehh it just reminds me of another version of the generic (ugly) shape that the non-branded buggy bodies have had for the last 20 years or so.
hence Robby's description 'Bugly'
Mike who is the engine builder for the hummer?
Fugly!
Man I cannot wait for this to start. Hope to see some live TV coverage. Last year was super with all the people on the forum rooting for Robby in real time. Hope to see you all again on the live time thingy on this site.
