STAGE 3: SAN RAFAEL > SAN JUAN
Connection 295km | Special Stage 301km | Total 596km
COURSE OVERVIEW
The competitors of the 2014 Dakar will experience their first taste of the mountains by passing through the Pre-Andes. The Aconcagua Volcano stands 6,962m high and will observe the progress of the vehicles, of which a part will rehearse their high mountain driving techniques. The motorcyclists will climb up 4,300 metres during their special stage, on a ridgeline where they will have the impression of towering over the whole of America! The descent will bring them back to the tough reality of the drivers of the Dakar, as they will only have finished the first part of this marathon stage. They will have to ensure the mechanics for their own vehicles at the isolated bivouac which has been set up for them.
The GREEN section of the route is the connection , the RED is the Special Section of the stage.

Got him now, per dakar.com....
Sam Sunderland, who brilliantly won yesterday's special, has reappeared on the radar off the tracks alongside countryman Ben Grabham. The British rider had not emitted a signal for quite a while. He passed through CP2 in 15th position.
Seems a fair few riders have taken wrong turn....

Is there an environment in California or Arizona that would replicate the same type of conditions of the first two stages in the Dakar? Is it the combination of elevation, heat and humidity and going all out? Maybe come to Arizona and test at Sycamore Creek when it's 115, elevation is 2000 feet, 12 miles of wide open wash 100+mph wash and then all of the other terrain. Plenty of Desert Islands up to 7000' that see temperatures hit the 100's or Cinder Mountain OHV Park over 7000' can see high temps too and lots of open space and miles to test on. If humidity is a factor come in August. I'm sure Cali has plenty of areas to test in as well.
