STAGE 9 TRACKING
STAGE 9: CALAMA > IQUIQUE
Connection 29km | Special Stage 422km | Total 451km
COURSE OVERVIEW
The 2014 Dakar will reach its most northern point in Iquique, where the competitors will see the ocean for the first time this year. Above all, the drivers and teams will discover the Atacama Dunes again after a first part of a special stage which will be rather tedious. Dune specialists will be in command over a distance of almost 150km. Thrills will be guaranteed at the very end of the day, on the last three kilometres of the descent to Iquique: there is more than a 30% difference in height from start to finish and it is almost not recommended to break. The law of gravitation takes on its full meaning: the bivouac is not far away!
The GREEN section of the route is the connection , the RED is the Special Section of the stage.

It was apparent from the original photos that there was not sufficient chord section to get any significant down-force at all from that "wing". However, it made a nice appearance across the rear deck, made a great place to attach a strip of LED lights, and may have had a few folks scratching their heads.
Watching the videos of RG flying down the dunes at Iquique never ceases to amaze me. Tomorrow will be epic. I'm feeling good about a podium finish for the Gordini
The mood seems much better after today's stage. Hopefully Robby has a good run tomorrow. Can I have a ride a long going down iquique? I will hold the camcorder for as long as I can!
According to speedenergy.com:
"...finishing the tricky course in the 10th position with an adjusted time of only 15 minutes 54 seconds behind Stage winner Nasser Al-Attiyah."
But the Dakar web site shows him an hour and 15 minutes down. Any idea what is going on?
Never got an answer (in written form) as to why the extra hour (early in the stage), but it disappeared as mysteriously at the end of the stage.
Everyone here knew thru the stage he was having a solid day, thankfully it ended up that way in the end!
He started the stage an hour late,. and that because there was a huge line at the gas station,. he had to wait to get fuel for the Gordini. that prior to the start of the stage.
Thanks Chup. Exactly what I hoped had happened and certainly explains why RG was never listed as departed and mysteriously showed up at 58th to leave an hour later.
Shame on those who lost hope and interest.
Great photo... https://twitter.com/boerseq/status/422712887325765632/photo/1 not sure what day tho.
