STAGE 11 TRACKING
STAGE 11: ANTOFAGASTA > EL SALVADOR
Connection 144km | Special Stage 605km | Total 749km
COURSE OVERVIEW
In addition to the distance, here the competitors will be put to the test by all the difficulties offered by the Atacama Desert… and will have to display all the qualities required for off-road races. After the mine tracks and the many rivers to cross, the competitors will have to distinguish themselves in the heart of the Dunes of Copiapo: the fastest motorcyclists are expected to spend seven hours behind the wheel. Needless to say that on this decisive day there will be no shortage of opportunities for competitors to make a winning comeback in the race. This will be the key stage of the 2014 edition.
The GREEN section of the route is the connection , the RED is the Special Section of the stage.

there are lot's of teams still on course
So you can't bring you own fuel? South American gas while better than French gas is still poor, SA ethanol is hydrous whilie American ethanol is anhydrous. If you run E85 then the gas issue goes away since its mostly hooch.what else goes away is vapor lock and overheating. Petrobras sells decent blended fuels.
What increases is fuel flow and total required. However Corvette Racing has done a lot of work with E85 and the LS7.
I wonder if fuel mileage/range would be an issue with ethanol
RHR would be able to relay ETOH mileage and what they did to improve it. Need to sign Petrobras as a sponsor but there is that whole Brasil vs Argentina issue there.
Yes that is exactly right.
You would need to bring a lot of fuel, transporting it unless you use a tanker truck would be a huge risk.
How much fuel can the cars carry while racing?
As much as they want, they just need to be able to clear 880km. Section 31P5 of the rules:
3) All Vehicles must have a minimum range of 800 km, with the exception of 100% electric Vehicles. Each Competitor is responsible for calculating their fuel range. In no case may Competitors make any claims against the Organisers if their Vehicle fails to cover the minimum distance of 800 km, regardless of the nature of the terrain.
For safety reasons, a 10% margin is indispensable, i.e. a range of 880 km.
You can require AVGas for petrol powered vehicles but you need to ask for it ahead of time. Fuel information for the rally can be found at http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2014/us/looking-for-sponsors.html
Avgas has low RVP because boiling points decrease with altitude. It has a lot lower RVP. E85 has an RVP of something like 3 and Gasoline is closer to 9. Ethanol also has a real advantage because of its evaporative cooling properties. There are conditions were you can actually freeze an intake.
You would think the quality control would be a bit better though.
They have a quote from Peterhansel up:
"The game is over. We've had a good laugh and enjoyed ourselves. Yesterday evening, the team asked us to not take any more risks. It's a bit frustrating because we've done most of the hard work. But, if Mini wants to have three cars on the podium, at the speed at which we are driving out in front, it's easy to crash a car or even two in just one day. We know that this can happen, but I didn't think that they would do it."
While he isn't my favorite driver it has to hurt to be 5 minutes away from a win and not being able to do anything about it.
It is also interesting to note that Nasser would be leading if not for that 1 hour penalty.
what team orders?
