Join in and discuss the FINAL stage of the 2014 Dakar Rally. Thanks to everyone for supporting the team and the planet. It's been a tough few weeks, and hopefully we'll be here in 2015 to do it all again!

Cool thing I just saw while watching the Eurosport broadcast of today's stage; right as Marc Coma got off his bike at the finish and the camera people approached him, he pointed his finger at the visor of his bike, which had a "Caselli - 66" sticker on it, and he kept patting it for a few moments. Quite touching to see right at the end of his rally, at the moment he's won his 4th Dakar.
Yup. Very nice.
Caselli was defiantly a class act-nice to see other riders show their respect to him!
Thanks for sharing that bit of observation Thomas E.!
Will see You Dakar Peru 2015 !!!!
Ok, So does anybody know what the LS7 makes for horsepower? I have it at 505hp which would make the horsepower loss at 10,000ft like 151,5 hp. I have the weight at 498lbs.
The VM 3.0 liter turbo diesel makes 241hp and 406lbs of torque and weighs 507lbs. The Maserati twin turbo makes the same torque but HP goes up to 404. Gale Banks can take it to 600hp. There should not be an appreciable loss of power with the diesel.
So what and how much advantage does the LS7 have? If the Gordini is a "production" vehicle of RGM can it use the Banks motor? Some Sheikh should be interested in buying a Gordini or two.
the key words in the rule book is 'production engine' as in unmodified.Banks is a modifier. the other key point is, how much power with the restrictor installed and how to make the most power thru the restrictor.
Un-restricted horsepower and torque numbers mean little to nothing.IMO.
Funny thing is Carlos had the same engine, why isn't everyone thinking Carlos needs some unknown engine?
The HST Gordini is not a production vehicle.
As far as i know and its only CART/Nascar/ALMS fan experience you do not make more power through a restrictor. If RGM builds a street legal Gordini does it become a production vehicle? what is needed for homolgamation (sp)?
VM has been building diesels for awhile now and the new Maserati biturbo diesel will be designed by Ferrari.
No vapor lock, no power loss, better mileage.
I'm guessing you haven't gotten to read the rule book.Restrictor's ,yes they take HP/Torque any. That's why in my post,I said it doesn't matter what the un-restricted numbers are.
The Toyota team started with a diesel for 2014,then quickly realize the program was to expensive, and switched back to gasoline.
No the South African series only allows(Where the Hilux was developed) Gas engines which is surprising , as the Hilux only has a diesel for the production Pickup.
when I have a chance,I'll find the article where the Imperial guys talk about the diesel project.
The point is (IMO) diesel power as a privateer would be foolish.A privateer does not have the budget and resources as BMW.Even the CUMMINS France SMG (#321) ran a Chevrolet LS.
Good info Mike. There's also a marketing aspect to the loud American V8, that's RGs "signature."
The restrictors also attempt to equalize any engine performance advantage that one option may have over the other. Making ASO's rules package even more complicated is they are trying to level a playing field between the 2x4 and 4x4 classes. Not an easy task. The mini's camp of getting an increase in hp will now have to be addressed since they completely dominated the race this year.
