Matt Mingay's family has released more information about the Australian driver who was injured in an accident during Saturday's Stadium SUPER Trucks Series race at Belle Isle.
After undergoing surgery Saturday night for facial injuries, Mingay was released from critical care but remains in intensive care at Detroit Receiving Hospital, his family said in a message posted on Facebook.
Mingay suffered severe facial injuries in his hard crash on the third lap on the 2.3-mile track. He underwent a five-hour reconstructive surgery Saturday to insert a prosthetic chin to rebuild his jaw and mouth region. According to his family, his injuries include a large cut from lip to chin and several smaller cuts. He is breathing on his own through a tracheostomy and responding well to treatment.
The Detroit News reported Mingay's truck flipped over after swerving to avoid traffic during the race, shearing off the roof. The SST series called off Saturday's race but returned to the track Sunday for its scheduled second race, which was won by Indianapolis 500 competitor Matthew Brabham.
"It was great to get the win today and really make it two from two, but our thoughts are with Matt (Mingay) and his wife Sheena," said Brabham. "It was a crazy weekend and all our thoughts and prayers are with Matt and his family. We were racing for him today. We were so happy to see him taken off the critical list, but obviously he has a tough road ahead of him for a while and we all just hope his recovery is a quick and as successful as possible."
Mingay is expected to remain hospitalized for several weeks.
"The operation went really well. They did an awesome job of putting him back together," Paul Morris, a fellow Australian competitor and friend, told Speedcafe.com.
The Queensland, Australia, native is a stunt rider, stunt-riding instructor and an action sports entertainer, according to his website. He had two SST wins in 2015.
