Peterhansel clocked the second fastest time of the day, behind upset winner Vaidotas Žala, despite the teething pains of his partnership with new co-driver Paulo Fiúza.

We wandered around a bit and must have lost three to five minutes looking for a hidden waypoint. The directions were hard to understand in English… I must be going soft in the head. In 21 editions of the Dakar, I've never had a co-driver talk to me in English, so I need to get used to it. There were dunes, sandy plateaus and rocky sectors where we had to walk on eggshells. We're good at adapting to these conditions, we're nimble!"

interesting- Paulo Fiuza is Portuguese

Intially Peterhansels wife was going to be his Navigator but she became sick just before the Rally

Thanks for posting Mike. We got a lot to cheer about after day 1 - Casey Currie and Brabec both in second place!

Price won the Stage. Coming 2nd in the Baja 1000 with Alytirah it is looking like a good run for Toby

see pg8

Thankfully Toby's KTM teammate Matthias Walkner started before him and had a solid pace with good navigation.
