Skyler Howes has been discreet since the prologue and finished eighth yesterday, 9’39’’ behind his team-mate Nacho Cornejo. He trails by more than 42 minutes in the general rankings and has no choice but to claw back as much time as he can to get back in the reckoning. He presently has the second-best provisional time after 26 km, 41’’ behind Ross Branch. Did you know? The American sports a moustache as a tribute to his grandfather, a former desert racing specialist who was similarly hirsute.

OIL HOSE PROBLEM FOR KLEIN | RALLY GP

Mason Klein broke an oil hose after 46 km of yesterday’s special. Sunier Sunier, also behind the handlebars of a Kove, stopped to help him and gave him some oil. Klein was able to resume the stage, unlike Sunier, but his engine broke on the link rout the bivouac. The North American decided to resume the race with a new engine and the resulting 15’ penalty, in addition to the 2 hours he had already lost in the desert.

KEVIN BENAVIDES IS AWARDED VICTORY | RALLY GP

Pablo Quintanilla, initially announced as the stage winner ahead of Barreda and Kevin Benavides, has in the end not picked up his 7th stage victory. The Chilean, but also Barreda, Brabec and Branch, among others, have received penalties for speeding on the special. As a result, Kevin Benavides is victorious ahead of Ricky Brabec and Adrien Van Beveren. The Argentinean thus opens his account for stage wins on this Dakar, bring his total to 8, equal to Sam Sunderland as well as KTM legend Alfie Cox, whose son Bradley also got caught by the speed gun in the Rally 2 class. In the general rankings, Branch still leads, 3’11’’ ahead of Cornejo and 5’08’’ in front of Brabec.
